Mobius's Antique old-timey (wimey) bead-board cellar bathroom Tardis door build

oh hullo again, it's me. when I was in 8th grade I scripted a Doctor Who fan-film, which I was going to enlist this really cute Chinese girl to be in, but was too shy to get it off the ground, and I was going to use the cellar loo as the Tardis. a year or 2 ago I had some blue paint left over in my brush for something and absent mindedly drew a call box type grid on the possibly 100 year old or so beadboard door, along with some window frames with 2 few vertical munton (window bar) lines. in September I ended up moving back into the old house, and working on my current build, I keep adding more blue to the door every time I go in to wash the brush, it suddenly dawned on me I should go ahead and Tardis that door up! (edit 5-28-16, I love how Tardis can be a verb!)
hence this thread, like my first thread, I am starting the thread, and it will probably be a little while before I start the build properly, but I'm starting it this time knowing this in advance and doing it to motivate me to make it happen.
I plan on painting the existing frame blue, along with the door, it's beadboard, but I'm not going to disguise that completely, the beadboard will be visible in the rectangular panels. if I'm going to cut windows into it, I'll have to move one of the internal structural bars (see photos below), up or down, probably I'll add one. might want to add another hinge to help with  the increased load, but I hope to keep it as lightweight as possible. going to use 1/4" plywood, I have some which is very rubbery as the grain all goes the same way, curious stuff, but it'll work for this. the door is tall enough that I can put an illuminated call box sign at the top and still have adequate headroom for anyone to get inside.

there is some missing material at the top, due to old pipes which are no longer there having been once routed through the door frame, the first thing I want to do is restore the missing wood, but where will I find beadboard? I wondered to myself earlier today, then looked down and noticed a small pile of it, maple, left over from the kitchen upstairs I remodeled. and one piece is already ripped to almost exactly the dimensions I need for the smallest piece, only need to make it a little smaller, even ripped on the correct side, the tongue side, the groove is still there, which is precisely what I need. it's ridiculous good fortune, and I took it as a good omen that I should definitely do this.

I have a tin sign which if it seems like the right size I might use, tho I think I might want to make my own so I can change the wording slightly, you have to push this door to open it, and I don't think I will put a phone box chamber in it. not going to make it into 2 french doors because it has a very nice antique handle and lock which I don't want to remove. so I want the sign to say push to open, not pull to open.

dusted off and painted the door and frame blue, its amazing how happy just doing that made me. had a look at that flexible plywood I have, thicker than I thought, but very lightweight. measured the door and started drawing up a blueprint, but then I had to go see Gary Numan play a concert up the street.

I recommend painting doors blue.

also realised if I am going to put a sign at the top, which is to be mounted in the frame, not only do I not have to patch the missing parts of the top of the door, I have to shorten it, so light can get through to the sign!

plans evolve!

end transmission.

Hmmm... A basement; pipes running hither and thither; an 800-year-old door; and a roll of chain link fencing just outside that door, and at the ready. ???

::)... Okay: I am now officially scared! :o

To be fair, if you did make the door into a french doot you wouldn't have to remove the lock and handle, just move the plank they are both on to the middle of the door. Just a thought.

I must be very poor at time management as I havn't even had chance to finish a scale model police box and I see Morbius, Dale and others making full sized builds in tandom with other projects and builds!

the blue loo door update

drew up a blueprint, already revised it tho since drawing it, a little, the sign will come out in front of the door frame a little.

moving the plank would not be simple as this door is made of tongue and groove planks attached to each other possibly nailed together, screwed from the back through 2 boards, I'd be afraid of them not sitting right if I rearranged them. also I don't want to do that much work on this one, just a quick fun project, hopefully. thank you though. it's Mobius, not Morbius, lol. Brain of Mobius is still in my skull, not in a jar yet. I should probably prepare one though for the future I suppose. and I'm terrible at time management, hopefully the time machine will help with that once done, just playing hookey at work a bit (bad me!)

for some reason this idea popped into my head for a st john's emblem (rough concept sketch shown)looprints.jpg mosw.jpg shiny .jpg
will update my "proper" build shortly, after dinner.

just a pic of the inside of the door, antique lock, we don't have the key to the top lock, but the bottom handle one still works, swing the little thingie down and it holds the handle closed. it's painted unlocked, but if the door's closed, no one goes in really. maybe instead of "police public call box" I should put "occupied" on the sign.
no not really.  I should probably unstick that bit though.

now that my main build is 99% done, I find myself thinking I need to get back to this one. looking at the door I realised the other day it's going to be simpler than I thought, all I have to do is take the door down temporarily to chop a bit off the top to make room for the sign. also, now glad I have left over black paper from my main build, so I can use it on this one's sign! there will be no actual phone chamber as there isn't really room, but I might put a hinged panel with a photo of a phone behind it! and an "out of order" sign. keeping my eyes out for a good small submarine style lamp to put at the top on the outside. there's already a centred hole in the frame where a pipe used to be, I'll just mount it there, nearly centred. d:

oh wait, maybe I'm wrong. I forgot about the windows. that's probably why I had to move the hinge, and one of the crossbeams from the inside. it would be nice to have actual windows, smoked, for privacy, of course, as it is a priv. but yeah. ah well. definitely going to have to take the door off to do that. at least I won't be dragging anything up 4 flights of stairs since the loo in question is in the cellar, along with my secret laboratory, I mean, workshop.

edit: wow I should really have re-read this not very long yet thread before commenting on it! apparently I'd already worked out some of this. d: pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. just an absent-minded professor.

This one will be fun to watch! (I really love that Ministry of Silly Walks logo! Brilliant! Before my back got hurt, I was always doing some sort of silly walk around the office while I was working. And to think, one bad roll on the ship put an end to that, and my career. :P)

I may create a graphic for that logo: thinking in progress (which means basic motor functions are running on minimal power).
