I was thinking about his enigma the other day. How about related the number of decibels being played through the speakers to the voltage that is going through the lamp.

So, as the TARDIS' vworp (as in one grind) got louder, the bulb would get brighter, and fade out, etc. You'd need to make it so the decibel>voltage eqution changed as the entire sound effect itself got louder if you planed to use it for video (otherwise the light would not be seen at the start of materialiastion, then suddenly fade in very quickly...) but, using a bit of computer jiggery-pokery, I reckon it could be done...

Also - has anyone rigged up a sound system for the demat. sound - if so - any advice about speaker position and where to aim it?  I thought about placing one facing down into the box, but the volume needed to hear it from outside would deafen anyone inside...

Um... for what it's worth, inside my build, which is fiberglass, i have a Thick wooden Block with a Coffee Table on it, i then purchased a set of Plastic Shelves from Woolworths which are 4 high, i then went and bought an Amp ( Rotel RA - 820 ) and a dedicated CD Player ( Technics SLPG490 ) and a Pair of Mission 720's Speakers ( i think ) and basically placed the Amp on the Second shelf, CD Player above and Speakers on the top shelf, i have found the speakers on the top shelf give the illusion that the sound is kinda coming from the top and because the speakers are above head height, so thus you are not directly in front of them but for your hearings sake, keep a pair of HeadMuffs in there  i selected these instruments purely for clarity of sound and ensuring the CD Player can play CDR's.

That's funny!  I always get asked to turn down my Tardis at events!  I have two powered JBL  PA speakers running half way up. (500 watts total) I have a small ipod shuffle with a output cord running to a small 4 channel mixer (non power).
I drilled a small hole in the right side wall to run the cord thru to the ipod, so, when given a cue, I can press the play button and watch people FREAK OUT!!!!  The TARDIS shakes and vibrates!  preaty cool.
It's always fun to watch...and the way I see it...when the vortex opens, the sounds must be quite loud and very awesome! (that's what I tell'em anyway!)

Just been reading through this thread - as it started way before I joined I'll add a couple of ideas which I'm going to be using on my Daughter's half size TARDIS. I'm making the flasher unit a little simpler as I'm stuck for time and it's very much a tight budget build.

Power supply for 12 volt:
I'm using a camping inverter i.e. it's a transformer that converts 240 volt AC mains to 12 volt DC so you can run 12 volt cool boxes etc with a mains hook-up (maximum 7 amps). They're normally less than £10 from camping and caravan supplies shops.

Sound recorder:
I know mentioned on the video that the digital sound recorder was around $35 but a personal CD player can be bought for around £8 from somewhere like Asda (UK Wal Mart equivalent). As it happens I've got loads of old car stereos lying around (I rewire classic cars for a living) so I was planning to use one of those for the sound effects.

Sound to light converter:
Have you ever tried connecting an LED directly to the sound output of a CD player or similar? Crank up the sound a little and you'll find the LED actually flashes in time to the sound! The power output is just enough to power one LED and probably wouldn't be enough to power lots of LEDs but that's easily sorted, just put a light dependant resistor on the end of that LED and it will control another circuit that you can connect lots of LEDs to.

I'll be putting this up on my build thread when I'm at that stage. I'm still putting the wooden exterior together at the moment.

Nah, I'm just used to being skint and using whatever I've got lying around. Without the convenience of a massive budget it's amazing what you can come up with.
