My understanding it that it was always the same prob, but had been tweaked.

Actually, it might be the magnetic tool the Doctor used to open the metal hatch in Carnival Of Monsters.

When I saw this picture I thought the same thing. It's one of my daughter's favorite episodes so I asked her and she said she tought so too.
We didn't have timeto find it before we had to head out this morning though.
I'd rather be a Dad than a Lord of anything.

not the tool from Carnival of Monsters. It had a rounder shape at the top and a black handle.
I agree with Bill "the Doctor " Rudloff maybe it was a medical tool of some sort he took along for a convention or something to look more "the part".
Or maybe it was a tool in another episode.
Wouldn't Bonhams authenticate something like that prior to auction?
I mean it is definitley not a sonic screwdriver.

The Bonhams lot description does say this costume was not screen used but for promotional events so "the item" is probably not a real prop.
My guess.

I remember the Pertwee smoking jacket going on auction, an original Alec Guinness Obi-Wan robe went at the same time! I only remember a picture of the jacket itself appearing on the site, but I do distinctly remember the blurb on the Bonhams page stating that the screwdriver in the pocket was merely "a pen with a toothpaste cap glued on the end".
