Dalek Clarkson - Richard's New Series Dalek

I'd always wanted a black NSD, but it appears fate may have conspired against me here. Yesterday Clarkson was moved into his parmanent home in the new back room behind the garage, but disaster struck as whilst in transit I slipped and ruined part of the fender. This would have been in need of touching up and repainting at the very least, but, combined with the fact that the paint also failed in areas on the shoulder section and soon we will have another dark grey Genesis Dalek moving in, I have taken the decision to repaint Clarkson completely over Easter. This was where I was hoping I could ask for some help.
I'm either going to go for my original plan of making the Ironside, or I'll go the standard route and create a Gold/Bronze NSD. Early on in its life for such a change, but this is the way things appear to have gone, so, anyone got any opinions here? I'm stuck between the two :-\

Gold/bronze lends itself being dirtied down - Daleks are supposed to be little tanks - in a way that black doesn't. Equally, silver a blue work nicely (have a look at the 're-creation' of Power of the Daleks http://www.youtube.com/user/PowerOTDaleks?feature=watch). Here, the hero prop was dirtied down with black shoe polish of all things!
And, any excuse really, here is mine.

And, purely to offer you other options here's mine with 'friends'!

Thanks Tony! That Dalek completely blew me away! Wonderful job, I'm very jealous ;). I've been leaning towards the bronze all day, it certainly looks like a tank as you put it, when I started Clarkson it was really as a replica of Sec, the character, and not a Dalek in itself, but since completing him I have really gained an appreciation for the bronze ones!
Bronze it is then, gah, I can't do the weathering properly for the life of me though! I'll have to look into that. Beautiful colours on your Dalek too!

I used Holts Duplicolour acrylic spray paints for the base colours (Ford Solar Gold and "Basics" Copper and Bronze). These were applied as 'mists' - building up the layers and sealed with clear acrylic varnish. My Dalek isn't one colour at all and appears to change colour depending on the lighting.

The fender is matt black misted with silver and sealed with clear varnish.

The 'weathering' is nothing more than finger-painting - using acrylic artist paints, start with a dark thin wiggly line and smudge to your taste (you can slightly dilute the acrylics but don't go too far or they won't adhere when dry). Gradually apply further, lighter-coloured coats, smudging/blending as you go and finally seal with a varnish -et viola, one dirtied-down Dalek!

I'll have to do some paint testing then! Back when I was starting my build I did some testing with Ford Aztec and Arizona colours, and using the misting technique got a result I quite liked, but then again many have got great results using just the base colours so more research is warranted I think! (And I'll need to track down this Renault Cinnamon Brown which is supposedly a nice match). Ah well, what more can I say than that I can't wait to get started! Hopefully I'll be able to complete the refurb over a couple of days in Easter, weather permitting.

We'll look forward to seeing it!

Interesting: Classic Series silver/blue coloring on New Series Daleks. (It does work.) And that was an interesting concept for their TARDIS entryway and their console. (I've got a table with those curved, ridged legs with the brass bear claw feet, but I just don't have the heart to tear it apart to build that console variation... though it would fit in my room.)

Great effort on their part, and it was nice to see a Doctor with some permanent facial hair (Peter Cushing not withstanding). It's just begging for a Part 4, though!

Bit pointless this update with no pictures, but hey I have a spare minute so I thought I might as well report progress in Clarkson's repair/conversion.
-As far as new parts go for repairs, I've ordered a complete new set of hemispheres from a new company online who also conviently suppply 100mm gaskets perfect for the oil seals. These will be much stronger and look much mor accurate than my electrical wire/plastic disc solution currently in place.
-I've "liberated" some aluminum mesh from my father's garage, no idea how long it's been there but it'll be perfect to go behind the heronrib currently living in the neck section - this is a detail that I missed first time round and since then I have come to appreciate how much difference this second layer of mesh makes to the trained eye.

I have also been working on a new idea (it's probably been done before, but I thought of it under my own steam and I think it's quite ingenious actually ;D). Frustrated with not being able to work on any of the bigger sections due to lack of materials/time, I have got to work on casting up another dome (should be finished within a few days). It's identical to the previous except for the cowl, which I made a new sculpt of out of clay to fibreglass over (I wanted to correct the profile at which it protruded from the dome, the previous was slightly too tall meaning the dome looked too thin). My plan is to paint this new dome and cowl in the bronze of the converted NSD, but leave the old one the current black. I won't fasten them down onto the rotating disk, so hopefully with a black and a bronze dome on standby, I'll be able to swap one for the other at my leisure to get a standard NSD or a black-domed Emperor's Guard Dalek from the end of Series 1.
*Actually just checking now it seems this has been thought of before but still, I think it's ingenious!*

Just a quick pick before I think it's time to move onto the gallery!
In short: I know last time I posted I was converting the black NSD into a gold one, but as always things never go to plan. I did some number crunching and realised that I wouldn't be able to afford the cost of all the gold paint to finish the conversion, and hence, unfortunately, was forced to redirect my efforts into an Ironside conversion. Clarkson is now painted in an off-the-shelf Dulux colour that I think is a decent match, and the webbing around his mid-section was bought cheaply from a hobby shop (not totally happy with it, but it serves).
On the whole I'm much happier now than I was with the black finish - although I prefer the black the thicker green paint and rough look attributed to the Ironsides allows the build to get away with many of the imperfections that stuck up like a sore thumb on fire and singing Space Odyssey on the black. Let me know what you think! :D

Thanks! Again that means a lot coming from the builder who inspired this build! ;)

THAT'S AWESOME!!!  :D
I'm so doing this to the cardboard Dalek now.

tony farrell

Excellent!
Why not try lining the hessian and then use the same paint effect. As for imperfections, you should see mine - there isn't a straight line in it! In any case, they're supposed to be tanks, so they would be dented and battle-scarred  :)

Since Clarkson's namesake likes WW2 stuff, I think you made the right choice.

Hahahaha good point thanks!
The "Genesis" Dalek will be called "May" - not particularly powerful looking but always a classic, whereas when I eventually finish my K.9 that will be called "Hammond". No explanation needed there!
