My Met Box Build

I was always, originally going to have mine with a left hand door leaf opening outwards, and the right opening inwards (as my concession to the TARDIS) That way i could fit more stuff inside it if I needed to.

However I decided it would be a bad idea due to water ingression... The Met Box has a slanted floor which I have always assumed was to let rain water out. If I had the doors going both ways, there would be no way I would be able to have the sloping floor, so I stuck with the inwards opening instead...

I discovered the other day that, in the winter/spring months, you can actually see my TARDIS from the main road...

Its been up nearly two years now, and I'd never noticed this before... I really hope it doesn't cause an accident :o

Nice long shot, that first one. In that close-up, if not for the white window frames and PTO panel, I half expect to see Jon Pertwee - wearing Patrick Troutghon's costume - come stumbling out of that box.

Two years up and she still looks beautiful! Thanks for posting such great photos.

Nice build! I love the can see it through the trees shots, i bet somebody driving along might glimpse and think did i just?? Naaaaa.

Also impressive work on the power lines, keeping it all straight.

it looks like it had been abandoned there.

Those nighttime shots with the window light on the snow are ridiculously good. What is the wattage of bulbs you use to get everything so bright?

A very nice build! I always think the sturdy met box style looks the best and you've really caught the thing there. It looks like it's taken some weather over the past few years too. I'm building one which is going to be in an exposed place on a hillside. Any anti-weathering tips?

Hi

With me weatherproofing really is a case of trial and error... however I have found that sealing the joints with paintable silicone sealant, followed by a few coats of rubberised car underbody paint works best for the areas where horizontal and vertical sections meet (such as the roof tiers and where the walls meet the floor, etc) One thing I have found with this method though is to use a water based primer to go over the top of the rubberised paint, as I originally used a sprayable car primer and this can bubble up in direct sunlight...)

I recently made new doors for my box, and i've tried applying a clear, paintable wood preserver to them prior to painting. I'm hoping this will make them last longer as well

best of luck with your build... :)

I've used an LED lamp inside, I'm not sure of the wattage, but it was the equivalent to a 40w tungsten lamp.

I think they look brighter because of the longer exposure of the night time shots...

Are you going to allow someone to reclaim your old doors and have them use them as "decorations"? ;)

:D I'm not sure anyone would want them... They've warped a little with the terrible weather we've been having over the last two years, and the "marine" Ply has delaminated in places...

That is what has prompted me to seal the latest versions... If i'm honest my wood-working skills have come on a little since I made the first doors, and the new ones do look a little nicer ;)

I'm sure someone could have them as decorative TARDIS art. ;)

Thanks for the tips. I've been using your build as one of my inspirations for my own! I went with rubberised paint for the roof and I've used flexible acrylic wood filler for just about all the major joints. A different climate here with short bursts of rain then nothing but sun for ages. Time will tell...

I took your advice and used a water based primer on the rubber layer. It seems to be holding up okay and it's been in 40 degree temps for a few weeks now. Guess it's when the temperature really changes that any problems can show. I've also generally just layered on as many undercoats as I can afford/be bothered to apply!

Apparently, back at the end of June someone flew over the house in a helicopter  ;D
