Well, not a lots been going on with the console, mainly due to money, but I've been trying to do some small bits. I have been thinking of how to create the tops of the buttresses. I have come up with a solution. I have used chicken wire and Mod Roc/ Plaster of Paris Bandage to cover the top. It isn't really hard to make, its a bit flexible, but strong enough to hold the parts on top I think. The handy thing about it is that it makes the buttresses lighter, therefore easier to transport. The Mod Roc and way the wire has a few lumps and bumps also gives them a good texture. :)

I have put up two lights, one each side of the doors, which give enough lighting that it doesn't overpower the green LED's on the console. I also bought some Pipe Insulation to go around the base, rather than buying expensive and heavy piping.

P1060474.JPG

I also found a cheep way of creating the crystals in the form of Screwball Pots. Six screwballs for £1, you can't really complain, its cheep and looks good enough for what you need :)

P1060475.JPG

I bought some paint for the buttresses, its a medium coloured brown, cost £3.17 for a small 250ml tester pot from B&Q, I bought two and got a dark brown for free, Good ol' Buy 3 for the price of two :)

I've had the idea that I'm going to use cardboard fro the rim, this is because it will be a lot easier to shape, paint and transport, plus if it breaks its easily repaired :) Anyway thats about it for now, more soon

Great to see another build from you Aaron! I guess I've silently admired your consoles up until now but never got off my arse and said so ;)
It must be great fun thinking up ways to build bits of this thing! I'd love to have a go at a console myself someday, no idea which one, but it must be such a fun challenge trying to invent new ways to get the look you want! :D Maybe after I'll have a go at the 2013 console...no one has done it yet and seems as good as any, but ah well!
Great console, great TARDIS and great costume at the end there! I did look back but couldn't find a mention- are you planning to use the Police Box as an entrance to the console? (Sorry if that has been answered before!)
Isn't it how ironic that we have to think of solutions out of the box, in order to build our boxes a lot of the time?

BioDoctor900

Hey Superchillia,

Thanks for the comment, It's a console I've enjoyed making and remaking :) You find yourself finding new ways to make it and experiments, this time, im trying to do it as well and as close as I can with the budget I have, there's still a lot to do, but once the perspex has been bought for the panels and the buttresses covered and painted then its all a go, just a case of glue gunning the parts on :) The Girlfriend smiled when she saw the comment :) Its also really good with making the console as it shows how far I've come with making things and how the quality of the things I make can be. I can remember my first console I ever made, was more like a Hartnell console. It was a old washing bin, the lid was rounded and I covered it in paper, cut up a belt, had a paint pot and a dyson cylinder and a few odds and sods id put on top. (I was 10 at the time :D) My consoles have all been stuck together with selotape, but I have moved on to use A GLUE GUN!! How wondrous technology can be  ;D
Anyway in answer to your question, we are thinking of possibly modifying the doors to the summerhouse the console is in, although they are only 6ft high

Thanks for looking

Hey Guy's, So It's my 19th Birthday today, and I thought I'd come round my mates and do a bit more work to the console.

The Mod Roc dried well, the top of the buttresses have a bit of flexibility, but seem ok. So I painted it and glued on a set of levers, the bell and put on some bits to see what it could look like

I tried out what the rim would look like made of cardboard, it didnt come out too bad

P1060542.JPG

And me and Tom have been painting the beams and door frame. it's starting to come together, slowly but surely :)

Looking good, Aaron! Interesting, using the chicken wire mesh on the ribs like that. And I notice (on the ground under one of the console's "feet") you've got what looks like the exact fire extinguisher that's clipped (or was clipped) to the rib of the actual prop. Nice find! (Where did you find that little goodie?)

Ahhh good spot, yup it is a Pyrene Fire Extinguisher, I picked it up from a car boot for about £4, along with two bicycle pumps, one for 50p and the other for £3 :) I love carboots :)

I'm guessing that in the US a carboot would be equated to a "flea market", or maybe a garage/yard sale. Problem is, thanks to 'Antiques Roadshow' what used to be bargains like that at places like that are now expensive, with the person selling it telling you all about how he saw "one exactly like it on 'Antiques Roadshow' that was worth hundreds of dollars", just to justify selling a copy of something at "a bargain" of $90 - no haggling.

Really good find on that extinguisher! (And a superb price!) I think I'll poke around ebay, and if that proves fruitless, well, there's always hardware stores and their great selection of PVC pipes and end caps that can be cobbled together for a "close enough" version. (As one SFX and model-maker once said in an interview, 'most people go into hardware stores and see plumbing pipes and fittings as just that; I see spaceship parts!'.

I found out a couple of interesting thing about those Pyrene fire extinguishers. One is they are all over ebay at the moment, some with and some without brackets (and not all brackets have those wrap-around clamps to hold the extinguisher in place). They are in carious states of "shininess", and some are brass while others are chrome-looking. And they seem to be undergoing bidding wars as the auction time gets close. There are some "Buy It Now" listings, but they are very few and pricey.

The other thing I learned is that they were invented in Delaware, USA! With so many parts on the 2005 console being UK automotive parts (and the Pyrene extinguisher also being used for automotive purposes as well as for the home), I was very surprised to find an American part on this console! (There may be other US-made/invented parts on it, but the Pyrene was the first one I found that was definitively Made in USA.) Amazing. (Or should that have been "Fantastic!"?)

Just a couple of new bits I've picked up for the console

And I've been thinking of usingCD drive motors instead of Hardrive ones as these are a lot easier to get hold of and take apart

Nice! I've had a set of Helping Hands with me since I stole re-allocated them from 1987 when I taught Electronics in the Coast Guard and the school was going to throw them away. (I built kit models back them and the Helping Hands came in quite, well, handy!)

And that CD-ROM drive motor is a good idea. I think I've seen those drives somewhat prolifically in some second-hand stores, and for dirt-cheap prices.

Hey Guys,

Well after lots of cutting cardboard, sticking on duct tape, mod rocking, painting and glue gunning, the console is really starting to take shape :D

I'm really pleased with how its looking

Looking really nice, BioDoc! What did you use to light up the console? I looked back through your posts and saw what looked like the wiring for it in wavy lines, but I couldn't seem to find the bit that said what it was. (I know I probably just missed it :P.)

Its a set of 100 Green LED lights, cost about £5 off of ebay. Also forgot to say, Jarrod won't be the only one having his console displayed at a console ;).....

Thanks! That one's simple enough... already have those (will be sealing from that Hogswatch Tree's light storage box ;D).

Erm... Did you mean to say "...console displayed at a convention"?
