If you were to look at the internal construction of the box - in particular the posts - you'd be surprised that it lasted for as long as it did.

Do you remember the landing scene in Death To The Daleks? The prop wobbles terribly!!
Must have been a slight breeze that day in Wapsey's Wood....

Erm... it was meant to do that. It was to show the TARDIS landing with minimal power having been stricken by the Exxilon Energy Hoovering City Mast.

Really?

Oh....

I'd only noticed it recently - up until now I'd been preoccupied with Liz Sladen in a bikini.

Hmmm, if you recently switched your brand of tea, I'd switch it back... ;)

Yes, and they'll sound like Exxilons and/or Jon Pertwee.

I agree, it does look very deep. It almost looks as if they had a telephone cubby hole built behind the missing phone panel door, although there is no evidence of that in previous stories especially when the panel was mistakenly positioned on the left door. Most curious! Any theories???
it could have gained a phone cubby hole, when lent to,out of the unknown, episode"get off my cloud" when it was used as a police telephone box...could have acquired those handles to [invasion&krotons]

I wasn't going to post this yet but, I've been working on the history of the Brachaki Police Box prop from 1966 to its last known appearance, but, here goes: The original phone panel got swapped to the 'wrong' front door for Evil of the Daleks (refitted sometime between 17.3.1967 and 20.4.1967) where it remained until The Dominators. For The Mind Robber, it got a coat of paint to 'dirty' it down. The phone panel and right-hand front door were fitted with handles for location the filming of "The Invasion" (filmed 3.9.1968) and the original phone panel's last appearance was in The Krotons (recorded on 13.12.1968). The Police Box appeared minus any phone panel at all for part one of Seeds of Death and a simplified panel was then fitted in January 1969. The 1/5th scale model was fitted with handles to match.
You mentioned a cubby hole for a phone - this box-like construction is visible both in The Invasion and Seeds of Death:

Checked Mark Ward's wonderful book on OOTU for production dates, and the taping and filming on 'Get Off My Cloud' did indeed take place just before the 3rd September 'Invasion' shoot.  8th, 9th, 12th & 13th Aug for pre-filming on location and at Ealing, then 28th & 30th Aug at TC8.

Thanks Tom, it does indeed appear that the handles and box/cubby hole for the phone was fitted for Out of the Unknown! Another snippet to add to our growing knowledge!

Tony, this is my favourite era for details of a TARDIS prop.

Maybe it's just the angle of the close-up shot from "The Krotons", but it looks like when they made the changes for "The Seeds of Death", they used the (larger?) handle from the phone panel for the right hand door.  That handle then seems to last for the remaining lifetime of the prop, albeit the flat screw areas are painted over during the Pertwee era.

Hi Gerald,
The Brachaki Police Box prop (even in its later 'butchered' state) remains my favourite too...original and best, so to speak.
I'm not sure there's any difference in the sizes of the two handles - this grab from the Krotons seems to show that the right-hand door's handle just seems to have been mounted slightly higher than the one on the phone panel.

I agree with you that whichever handle was mounted to the right-hand door, it remained in situ throughout the remainder of this props' appearances - as these grabs indicate:

I also agree that handle's the screw-fittings were later painted blue - leaving just the actual handle silver.

Though, by the time of "The Android Invasion" the whole handle was a dark blue

great job tony, you have unlocked a lot of mystery from that late Hartnell/troughton tardis prop era. on a curious, note why such a radical change to the phone sign(seeds of death) even in a hurry to fix the damage,it resembled nothing like the previous police box sign, was it to give the prop a darker look? the white lettering on dark effect, did go through many years & props?.inaccurate mistake or happy accident ;)  phil
