Thank you, it's funny because on all the plans it says the corner posts have a flat surface of 4 inches, and I had that on my replica build - the posts look too skinny. The TYJ has much bulkier posts, which is why it was pretty much the first thing I investigated & placed my hand on it, snap a pic (this was not during restoration of the BBC box, this was the Privately owned prop) and then compared it to my replica... it showed that 4 inches is too small a measurement.
So in light of my findings -all those plans of TYJ design NEED amending  - if you want to make it more accurate.
:-) MBH

compare the pillars, mine are 4 inches wide and the actual prop is 4.5 at least!

Good reference and comparison photos Mark.  :o

So the questions that materializes in my mind are: Are the posts wider than 6.5", and if so, is the base wider than 4' 6"?
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

timerotor

indeed every new revelation will cause more questions.
The answer to which is....?

I think you stick to the measurements you have, adjust the pillar flat surface and you'll have it.

I can't remember how wide/long the base plinth is.

s'ok Mark  ;) I will just have to make my posts (and perhaps even the walls) before my base. It will help me judge the distances better.

Thank you for all your help.

Overlaying Mark's box with a pic of the TYJ MK2 in a similar shot, you can see the posts are noticeably wider.  At least 1/2" towards 1" wider at the most.

yeah, but I think my replica is only about 0.5 -1 inch ( maybe .5 -quarter of an inch either side narrower than the real thing...)

with respect that picture is a bit misleading... yet fun  -reminds me of the record sleeve for the Doctor Who Sound Effects! LOLdoctor-who-sound-effects-large.jpg

That photo (on the sound fx record cover) is the smaller of the two 60's models. Interesting that here the original lamp is still present instead of that blue dome that was painted on for the title sequence! :)

I just took a look at my old thread Timerotor's TARDIS, ALL the answers are on there! WarmCanOfCoke, go to that page, read it, and make sure you see all the comments, I mention the width of my pillars and the base plinth on there!
(got myself quite excited then) LOL

Amazing what you forget when you've moved forward from your build thread only to find gems in it.

Hello Bill!

Been lurking for ages but I'm a sucker when it comes to the TYJ, it's always been a quest to find out the pillar dims!
Is there a consensus on the size of the quarter round sections?

I've always believed the flat was closer to 4.5 inches, it definitely looks good enough in the Sketchups I've done - so corner posts 1.25?

yeah it's amazing, all I have to do is measure MY Tardis at the parents and according to my thread I have to add two inches, then we will have the correct base measurement for WarmCanOfCoke too! as mine is one inch either side smaller.
Hmmmm....

I wouldn't put all my eggs in the photogrammetry basket, but the proportions of the corner posts appear to be 6.5" total width with 4" center strips and 1" radius quarter rounds. The photo of timerotor's hand suggests something larger than 4 inches, but this doesn't mean the proportions are wrong in the plans. Even given a little wiggle room, distortion and illusions, it's a good case for the entire prop being larger than assumed. Didn't Purple write something about the dims being quite unexpected when he made notes on the prop years ago?

The superimposed lines don't quite tell the whole story here. The widest part of the posts (and the center door strip) all lie in the same plane so even a slightly distorted photo is fine to lift the proportion of the posts to the overall width. It checks out. The front strips are closer to the camera and will appear wider than they are, but the result still favors them being narrower instead of wider. The doors are set back a bit, but their proportions check out just perfect, too (12" wide windows).

There is the very real possibility that the posts are 7.125 wide (7 inches plus the little bit of reinforcement on the inner strip).

The green overlay on the right is on top of Purple's document. The only things I changed in the plans were the post widths, the signs (now 45") and the roof steps (widened an inch). I think we have a winner!

EDIT: Note that 4.25 should actually be 4.5 in that drawing. I had a little math slip.

I've always thought that the edge where the doors  and panels are was wider, ( possibly leading to the much larger than expected trim on the NST) and seeing as the front doors hang off it,  it makes sense to be strong enough.  I know a lot of plans show the corner posts to be just a 90  degree construction,  but surely some  wrap-around  would help with construction.

following this threat with interest. Sorry I've been out of contact these last two weeks I'm recovering from some leg issues. So 7 inches and a little bit over huh? ..... I will dwell on this. Thank you all for keeping up the discussion.
