It seems to flick between older Greek/mathematical Gallifreyan and then more modern (3rd/4th Doctor time) to be more symbolly. Bear in mind we don't know how long it is between the Doctor's various trips to Gallifrey. It is only a few years to him but could be hundreds of years to them. Remember how different Gallifrey is between the Deadly Assasin and The Invasion Of Time.

P.S Why does the forums spell check not recognise the word Gallifrey?

I may be wrong (happens a fair bit) but I'm sure I read that when it comes to Gallifrey a TARDIS can only travel within normal Gallifrey time. ie if the TARDIS doesn't return for the equivalent of 100 years on Gallifrey then 100 years will have passed for the TARDIS crew.

As always, happy to be corrected if required.

to type63 - I'll look into it but I believe Crispin has mentioned adding new words to the dictionary has some sort of unwanted effect ... I can't remember specifically - I think it may cause lag somewhere in the posting process ... I'm not sure.

to Mark - well I'm not up to creating an entirely new Alphabet and language myself. I remember reading the words "The Doctor starts muttering to himself in Gallifreyan" in a New Adventures once I got the impression it sounded Gaelic. If we look at the message from The Tomb of Rassilon - I believe several members from a Gallifreyan court are present, including "prosecutor" and "Doctor" - so one wonders if the Doctor had a hand in Rassilon's entombment and if it required a court prosecutor to get him there.

No.  What I meant was that I would love it if we could all solve the mystery of the old school Gallifreyan so we could make a font that is usable.   What I was saying was that there is already a "Circular Gallifreyan" that has been made into a font.   I am much more interested in the old series version.

Apparently to download these you have to register. It's free, just create an account (sort of like you had to do to join here). They'll send you an e-mail to confirm that you are a humanoid and not a bot. Then just click the link in the e-mail and you're good to go. The fonts download really fast, and since they're TTFs you can just slid them into your Font folder and start typing away. (They look pretty cool, too.)

The above says: Gallifreyan from "The Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey" in archaic-gallifreyan.ttf Apparently it's a web-recognized font. (So if you want to really make someone think you can change the font of your message, though I wouldn't advise doing that, unless you just want to make it your signature. See the post on translations to other languages for those rules.)

Unfortunately the assassins-gallifrayan.ttf isn't a web-recognized font so I can't demonstrate what that one looks like here. But at least I could show you the above archaic style from what I'm guessing is the "Shada" book. Although, when I type this:

If this book should care to roam. Box its ears and send it home.

And convert it to archaic-gallifreyan, it ends up looking like this:

So it's not the same as seen in the Book. But at least it's something to play with.

Wow that's great (the font). I've been looking for something similar for a while!
I have had a go at assigning the symbols from Shada to the Human English alphabet. Some is logic (Greek letters etc.) whereas others is "pseudo-logic". Some is just random assignment. I created it to label my console panel but I am enjoying using it as a personal code.
I liked the idea t the TARDIS is labelled in OHG as it makes it feel like a machine but keeps a sense of mystery.

Used one of the Gallifreyan fonts you guys posted from fontstruct in a Sketch-Up to label the Fast Return switch.  Looks great!   Thank you Dino!
