It shouldn't take too long to make one of these....

Once we get a few dimensions off of a real one.

I've whipped this one up one vectorworks.

Still needs some more details to be added...

eddyc

I was able to get the spec sheets from a supplier.

Here's a close-up of the details...

VA-220 Outline drawing.jpg

Using these drawing I have created a 3d version.

VA-220 from specs.JPG

I will now modify the model to match the one used in the show, so I can produce a solid item.

Now build and enjoy!

This is a great resource and a wonderful rendering ;D

Great work here!

Are you really planning on building one?

Eddy, you never cease to amaze me! :o Is there nothing you can't render and then create in solid form?

Thanks guys,

The software I use can give quick block renderings or when I take the time , like on this project. I create each part as a separate 3d model which I then have to put together.

This allows me to figure out each piece so I can make them all.

It also allows me to rotate the model and make pictures of any angle I like.

As for making one... it's still on the workbench.
In the meantime I managed to buy three of the green versions off ebay for $20 each.  A great deal.

Now I can check the measurements and create and exact replica.

The red one is the Varian Klystron VA220 and the green one is the Varian Klystron VA221.  I have four VA220s and two VA221s.  Cosmetically, apart from serial numbers and one or two nuts and bolts, they look the same.  If you mask off the end sections and spray-paint a green one blood red, you will have a ready-made replica.
Yours aye!

Thanks Mark,

Just what I was planning on.

In the same lot I picked up a VA259a which is red so I have that to colour match from.

There is something about these klystron parts that are just so interesting.

If you have seen a 'Ka Band Reflex Klystron' you know what I mean!

.....I wouldn't do that to you......

Everyone grab your plastic... or cardboard and start building.

And of course we will start at the base.....

More will follow as I measure the units I have.

museumdave

Eddy,

This is really cool....

I think your work is incredible- AND I have NO wish to discorage your build, but I was thinking if it were me and I had a green one i would paint a green one red and be Thrilled with that.  Anyhow keep us posted.  I always look forward to seeing what you have been up to.

Cheers

I will be painting the green ones red..... I have a few friends birthdays coming up!.

Even though I have an original item I still feel like I have to make my own.... it's the challenge.

Thanks, but I meant the inner diameter and outer diameter :)

Sorry, The shims are 1 inch OD and 27/32 ID.

Hope this helps,
