The Pale Green Console and Set

The answer (to quote Richard Pryor) is "None of the above!" ;)

Actually when I picked a green for the fault locator walls, I started with what one site refers to as Sylvan Green and later made some lighter versions (as shown in the pic above with 4 stripes).

I still have the original Console Green if you prefer that one.

My view is that the walls and console were the same colour - this strange very, very pale green that comes across as being mint green in some lights and a more moss green when in the shade. What I'm trying to do is to is to visualise that for people so that they can judge for themselves.

I actually used the "Console Green" texture here but due to the current lighting it looks darker...

Brilliant - this precisely illustrates my point about the different lighting. I'm really pleased we're on the same wavelength here. (I see you've adjusted the position of the small 'window' (thanks). I think that this render should now be in the measurements thread as well).

On the 'sister' measurements thread the principal elements (and brief suggestions about materials and studio build-techniques) are, I think, in the process of being agreed or, maybe, tacitly accepted; here, I think we might have the beginnings of an agreement on the colour scheme. It's by no means definitive but little bits here and little bits there might just be starting to add up.  :)

This should in fact be there already. I just copied the image code from the post I made there ;)

Ooops - sorry must have posted that request just as you were doing so!  :)

If it's of any help, I mentioned on another thread some time ago, that I'd Googled a very old British paint company called 'Mylands' that have been making paint for the Theatre, Film and Television industry since the 1950s. As the BBC were specifically mentioned as one of their customers, it seems likely to me that they would have been the company that supplied the green paint for the console and studio set. They very kindly sent me one of their TV colours swatch books, and the only two greens in the book that could be the likely contenders are 'Sylvan Green' mentioned above, or 'Glacier Blue'. I went for a Dulux match of the 'Sylvan Green' for my model Hartnelll console, and it does seem right to me. It's also possible that the paler 'Glacier Blue might have been used on the Mark 3 console.

I got this off their website some time ago. I suggest for online colour matching this might be better than a photo of the swatch (though the swatch is of course ideal for real world paint matching). I use this image as a reference all the time for studio paint colours that I might want to replicate in 3D.

Cool that we both came to Mylands independently, I'd say that was a pretty promising result :)

I also have this as a tif... Unfortunately I cannot upload that and the jpg is a bit lossy.......

Just curious, but is it possible that two colors were used on the original Console Room set? The Sylvan Green in the color swatch booklet definitely fits many of the color promo/publicity photos of the Hartnell console, and the Glacier Blue looks like it matches the walls pretty well. Maybe I'm just reaching, but the walls, while they do look "greenish", don't look as green as the console. (Having that Sylvan Green on the walls as well as the console would be rather harsh on the eyes, if you think about it.)

The Glacier Blue still has enough of a green hue to it that it could still fit Carol Ann Ford's description of the walls. (Actually, that Glacier Blue looks more like the color I've seen these days called "Sea-foam Green".)

Thanks Jonathan, Dino, Crispin and Marc. Have I understood you correctly Marc and you've used Sylvan green for the fault locator render in this picture?
2012-12-12-1-FaultLocator final.jpeg

And the only reason it appears a dark moss green is because of the lighting you've chosen?

This photo strikes me as the key (thanks Jonathan by the way - it was the one I'd seen but, my copy was 'back to front'  :)).

I've marked the points where I can't see any difference in the colour of the console from the colour of the upright with the letter A.

Here I need your help Marc, can you adjust the lighting on the render of the fault locator wall so we can judge how the Silvan green 'behaves'?

Tony

Hmmm, there are no lights to speak of at the moment (apart from the ones on the striplights behind the metal frames).

What I'll do is put a series of boxes across the floor with the the sylvan green and see how the light reacts with more and less shade.

In fact, it is lit by the background which is a special image just for that purpose. (HDRi - High Dynamic Range imaging).

2012-12-14-2-FaultLocator-sylvan_green.jpeg

What I realised also is that I used my old console green which was generated from an image (possible of sylvan green) but I think it's poor competition against doing it by the numbers.

Here for reference is the same image (more or less, I forgot to save the camera position) with the fault locator using the other green and the boxes with Sylvan Green. Perhaps, surprisingly, the wall is lighter than in the previous image.

I'll include it now with the walls, for extra shadowy effect.

And just for giggles I'm going to call this one the Power Of Thwee In Gween.

2012-12-14-3-FaultLocatorAndWalls-sylvan_green.jpeg

I should probably also remove some of the tint from the perspex panels at the back.

Gosh  ;D ;D ;D

Sorry, I'm so in awe of these renders that I may have misread your last post. Is the fault locator Sylvan green as well as the boxes on the floor?

Just so we're clear Marc, what would the Fault Locator and Scanner/Down-lighter Assembly look like in Sylvan green as well as the walls?
