I sometimes think that some of our builds can get a bit complex due to the amount of joinery that is involved with building a police box,a problem for younger members especially.
And lets be honest how many of us would refuse the opportunity to be whisked away in a Tardis ,no matter who's it was.
Well I sat down for 10 minutes and came up with a cheap and cheerful (to English members a Blue Peter) `Masters Tardis' that should be within the scope of all our members and won't cost a fortune.
And the Man hours on this up to now have been about 4.

I'm sure other members will come up with improvements or better designs than this,so be my guest, but this is to enable  the less capable among us to have a go !!

So Take!!, 1 66cm x 200cm sheet of corrugated roofing material not the plastic one  £9.48 B&Q

p1.jpg

and 2 66cm round plastic garden pots £12.50 each B&Q and 2.5 litres Matt Magnolia emulsion paint £7.45 B&Q

p2.jpg

About 20 short self tapping screws
and 8 longer self tapping screws (for the base and top)
a length of strong cord or wire
3 8ft lengths of 2"x1" wooden batten
so let me get this straight,A thing that looks like a Police box standing in a junkyard,It can move anywhere in Time and space ?

And
Drill a Hole in each tub

p4.jpg

Then cut around the tub  (careful now) All youngsters (and Galacticprobe) should do this with the help of a responsible adult

p5.jpg

Which leaves you,

You can then then bend the sheeting it is advisable to tie some string or wire around the centre of the sheeting to stop it springing back into shape and then push the sheeting into the lip of the first tub (we'll call this the base) which you have placed on the floor.
Don't forget this will only be half a column as you will want to hide in the back,A la master !!
You then repeat the action with the other tub for the top,
and voila!! you have a rather wobbly column ??? ,but don't despair ;)

p7.jpg Front view

You then support the rear of the column with a cut section of the 2x1 batten which you have cut to 200cm which will fit in both lips of the top and bottom and steady it a bit

p8.jpg  Rear view

Then take your remaining 2 lengths of timber and make a simple 60cm x 178cm frame
this will sit inside the base and the top and when pushed in will steady up the column .

p10.jpg Rear view

Then take your self tapping screws ,I used approx 8 pan head screws each side and screw them in top to bottom ensuring you keep the edge of the material at the edge of the wood this will take any bellying out of the column,
then take 6 longer screws and put them in the top and the bottom of the column from the outside they will be hidden by the lip of the base and can be screwed in at an angle ,thus joining the base and top to the roofing sheet.

It's going well!

Are the last two pics from the back?

Once you have got all the screws in (and don't forget to screw the rear support into place) you can lay it down and apply some paint ,you can use the remaining parts of the 2 tubs to hold it steady as they fit this role perfectly

p14.jpg ready for painting

p15.jpgFirst coat of magnolia (looking good  :))

once you have put the first coat on I advise that it dry overnight and then apply a further 2nd coat to ensure proper coverage

After the 2nd coat has dried then its time to dirty it up with a paint wash (theres lots of info on here about paint washes)

p21.jpgPutting the first wash on my Daughter applied the wash using crumpled up kitchen roll

Farewell Sarah Jane, you will be missed.

Now that I'm looking at the construction of the back, is there a square frame created in the back with braces from the sides, across the top and bottom of the column, sort of like a door frame?  I'm a little confused. Great looking TARDIS though,  my friend :)

Thanks for the compliments guys,
Jarenelo the frame goes inside and sits on top of the inside of the base as it is smaller than the column

I,m now getting nearer to completion of this project the man hours on it up to now have been 6 which isn't bad when you look at the result, the biggest pain is waiting for the paint to dry between washes .
I have to say that the washes have been done by my Daughter as she is more artistic than me  ;)

p24.jpg Second wash Painting a Master piece  :)

p27.jpg

p28.jpg

This will be put on properly after a green wash

p25.jpg

A bit over the top perhaps but I think it adds something and gives a feeling of old age I just draped it across to see the effect but when it go's on properly it will look like it is crawling up the column.
Don't ask me what the wash colours are as my Daughter mixed green brown and magnolia for this and we just guessed it.

Total outlay up to date

Corrugated sheet  £ 9.48
Pots                   £25.00
Paint                  £10.13
Screws and wood £ 9.70
Fake Ivy             £10.95
ToT                   £65.26

Amazing! Absolutely amazing. That thing looks like it's a hunk of marble that's been sitting around for a few centuries. You definitely kept me guessing with this one! Well done!

Erm... but... now it looks like you've got the Master's TARDIS inside of your TARDIS, which means yours is also inside his... How much of your TARDIS will you have to jettison now to resolve that recursive... thingy? ;D
