you know, that gold square-ish thing on the right of the insert pic looks a lot like an upturned tray of Wiskas cat food

Really?!!!! - do you have a reference picture? That would be cool if it was. I'm sure I could feed the Wiskas to Ginger my cat.(my friends nickname her Romana, because they have a cat they named "The Doctor".)

Also is this UK only packaging or do they also use it in the USA?
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

DoctorWho8

The ones here in the US are square with rounded corners, so they wouldn't look right for this.

I was just looking around at the Season 17 episodes for some references and I spotted that the gold thing with the joystick was elsewhere before hand. It was the MK III Emergency Transceiver from "The Creature From The Pit" and was installed (by Romana) on a different panel.

She installed it on this panel (though she has just taken it off again and put it on the side).

It's the panel where the "green" screen seen in Earthsock and onwards is at.  And notice the "randomizer" lever is back to the black knob.

Using a pair of needle nose pliers I was able to pinch the grommets off the clipboard from Office Max fairly easily (Not so easily for one from Staples and one that says Dexas on it. Those were made to last  :-\ ) Also after reading http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=282.0 I have searched around the house for those blanks you get when you buy CDs in stacks of 50 and 100 to aid in the building of my Time rotor.

I'm trying to figure out the dimensions of the Time Rotor.
TimeRotorinches.jpg
from this image I see the Red Tubes plus the Grey Dome Caps at the top of the cylinders are the same height as the width of the outer acrylic casing of the Time Rotor.

*Assuming this (Modified) schematic from the 1984 Mark Harris Doctor Who Technical Manual is accurate.

So if the outer Acrylic Case is 21.5 inches wide then the height of the cylinders plus the caps are also 21.5 inches tall.

The door stops that I am using for the Grey Caps are 14/16ths of an inch tall. A CD blank is about 1/16th of an inch tall. My cylinders are 23 and 9/16ths inches Tall - a total of 24 and 8/16ths inches in height. So I will have to "sink" them 3 inches into the black plinth - which will allow for more stability and balance of tubes when the Time Rotor rises and falls.

Now I am trying to figure out the height of the Black Plinth that Supports the Cylindrical Tubes and the height above the tube caps to the roof of the time rotor.
Rotordepth.jpg
It looks like the height of the black plinth plus a half inch is the height between the tube caps to the roof of the time rotor. - This is just eyeballing it.

*Assuming this (Modified) schematic from the 1984 Mark Harris Doctor Who Technical Manual is accurate.

if the Time Rotor has a height of 30 inches tall and the Cylindrical Tubes plus caps are 21.5 inches then I have to account for 8.5 inches. (*Amusing my figures are correct up to this point) The Black Plinth is 4 inches tall. (*something my father was telling me yesterday after measuring an image of the Rotor at it's apogee. Now I'm going to get the "I told ya so...")

*edit - I hope to see if this schematic - looks right if layered over an image from the show

I may be being a bit dim here but..... If the picture is Accurate why not print it out, measure a dimension you know and divide the value of the full dimensions by the measurement. This gives you your scale, and now measure everything else and multiply by the scale value

warmcanofcoke

this sounds like what my dad did to figure out the height of the black plinth - I guess I have to start listening to him more  ;)

You are brilliant - (it took a second for the penny to drop, but it got there in the end)

this is what I think I know:

I have the correct dims now, Correct dims are 30 inches tall by 21.5 inches wide,

Found this nice description of how Timerotor made his time rotor.

more to come soon after these quick calculations.....

*edit - updated

*edit - still needs work - it looks to me that on either side of the plinth there is a clearance of 1.5 to 2 inches ... so if I went with Scarfwearer's dimensions of 22.5 I could have a clearance of an inch and a half .... I think I may want to build a mock up first to see if I like the look or not. http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=1104.0 (this is back when I thought the width of the plinth was 19.5 inches across - the width of a roundel)

*edit - though ... looking at http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=282.msg41035 again it looks like he suggests the base of the black plinth is only 17 inches in the end..... that would give me 2.25 inch clearance on either side of the plinth.

*edit - dimensions from http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=3507.msg41307;topicseen#msg41307

ok I'm following these dimensions now

From what I can tell from studying the proportions in photos and the dimensions we're certain of, it would seem that the rotor tubes are spaced apart a bit more. I doubt any of it is metric - not even the acrylic parts in the 70s. A plinth diameter of 18 inches is a must if everything else is close in this diagram. The acrylic parts that the original lighting is attached to needs to be added as well as the alternate plates and caps, but this plan is consistent through each refresh of the rotor (except for the frosted panels).

If you look at this nearly overhead shot of a Tom Baker rehearsal, that 2.5-inch clearance would be about right.

Late70s32a(TBakerOverhead)Big.jpg

I know it's not the greatest photo, but if you look at the mirrored top of the black plinth you can see a couple of inches clearance around it, both on the column cover and the tubes inside it (tube reflections in the mirrored top not withstanding to throw the eye off).

Have you tried comparing the height of the black ring in the rotor to the height of the shelf that supports the panels?

Might sound odd, but while knocking up my season 17 console, I noticed a lot of similar dimensions. The whole thing seems VERY well planned to me. :)   According to Scarfwearer's plans (and he does admit that there is room for wiggling the numbers for accuracy) the shelf is 3.5. I suggest that the two heights might be the same.

Also, while it's good for reference I'm not sure we can rely on the technical manual for dimensions.... Though it does seem (from your blue and purple pictures) that it seems to be in good scale with itself...

I think I'll make use of this overhead photo of Tom though :)

Thank you Dino - 2.5 and 2.25 look close to the naked eye from a distance so when I make my mock-up to check if the dimensions look right I'll feel a little more confident that I am not completely too far off. (glad I uploaded that photo of Tom  ;) )

Rassilonsrod : always like to hear thought has gone into the original build - this will help me when I plan out the height of the panels and such. After looking at Scarfwearer's plans I see what you mean by shelf. I seem to remember Crispin saying his plans may have been as much as 4 inches off somewhere. However I really admire his build, and his plans, and sense of detail. I almost think Mark Harris must of had some access to the production- I wish he had provided as much detail to the dimensions of the console as he had with the Police Box.

if anyone had alternative suggestions for the dimensions for this console feel free to use my template of the console. *even if it isn't completely accurate  :P
