I have enjoyed discussing Tardis building and reading the build diaries of the very talented people on this forum. I'm afraid this may be a slow build diary, but I intend to complete it.

The main build I'm planing to start in 3 months. I have to fix the roof of my 3 bay garage, and set down a new concrete floor, paint the interior chroma-key blue, lay down some power cables from the house and attach a lighting system.... ok it may take longer than I think - I do have to work as well.

However I will share the first phase of my plan: Ionic Columns

My neighbors down the street are laying down new linoleum and are kindly giving me the remnant 12 foot cardboard cylinders free of charge. I have three of them and have been told two more are on there way. (*Edit May 1st 2012 : I have 5 twelve foot tubes and 1 seven foot tube now.)
IMG_1066.jpg
IMG_1067.jpg
first I intend to cut the cylinders down to maybe 7 or 8 feet in length - depending on the height of the new garage roof.
Then I intend to cut down along one side of the cylinder.
IMG_1068A.jpg
and then insert wooden forms along the length of the column. As seen here:
masterstardis.jpg

I then intend to attach spaced strips of molding along the length of the column to make it look like the ones in the Doctor's Tardis.

For the thicker columns I will have to use two or more cardboard cylinders side by side stretched over a larger wooden form, and the seam hidden by a piece of molding.

In the above photo Tom Baker (when standing up strait & at that time) is 6 ft 3 in (191 cm)

Roundels are 19.5 Inches (49.53 cm) in diameter

Quite soon I'll have to start measuring things

*Edit - Thanks to rassilonsrod for the http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=3486.0 with these plans I have to do far less calculations.
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

My desired Console is the Season 20.

I have a lot of this red filter hanging around my house - more than enough to also detail a Five Doctors Console - they threw it out at the University of Rochester many years ago. I wonder If I can use 100% recycled materials to build this console ... wait, I've already purchased stuff for this project...

Glad you like it Crispin  :D
Back in the late 80s / early 90s I purchased some transparent mailing tubes / document tubes. They have yellowed with age, and because they are plastic they have become scratched. I think I have found a replacement that works better. It is glass but not heavy. At Micheal's they are selling it for $19.99 US but at The Christmas Tree Store (weird name for a store that doesn't sell Christmas Trees) it is only $12.99 US.

I picked up one the other day to see if it would work. I'm going back to see if I can grab the others this week.

oh yeah and you can never have enough of these on a build like this

Modification:

one of the hardest parts about building a screen accurate prop is identification of the parts necessary to complete your build. Occasionally for the sake of completion it has become necessary to cheat a little. So I have a proxy "part". Until such time as I am able to identify / replicate that mysterious green object on the console I'm just going to use an antique Telephone-pole Glass Insulator. I was originally keeping these to use in a future 1996 Movie build...
IMG_1097A.jpg
some of my above parts (past posts) have objects such as bouncy balls to use in place of glass domes etc. At this time I'm just trying to make the console look good, in future when better materials present themselves I hope to upgrade.

I hadn't realised you were going for an actual build :)

Looks like you're making a great start :)

This is one of the reasons why I've been so gun-ho about asking questions and trying to be helpful to others.  ;) I am going to need a lot of advice.

They look even better! (At least you won't have to buy something to throw most of it away ;))

Well, I now have 3 of these Glass Vases  ;D
(they are 23 and 9/16ths inches Tall)
IMG_1124A.jpg
IMG_1122A.jpg
and the means to tint them
IMG_1121A.jpg
Green = Jon Pertwee
Red = Tom Baker
Pink = Peter Davison
Yellow = ..... ok I don't have an answer to that.
Got some coloured Acrylic for various bits of the console
IMG_1113A.jpg
and more coloured Acrylic
IMG_1127A.jpg
Red(clear), White (Opaque), and Clear
IMG_1114A.jpg
This Green cutting mat can be used as green filter.
and to make the colour strip on the season 20 console
I have a "Roscolux added colors classic edition" Sample Book / Swatch Book of colour filters.
http://www.rosco.com/us/filters/roscolux.cfm
IMG_1119A.jpg
Rosco is a company that makes coloured filters for Theater and Studio lights ...
this is a Sample book it runs about $7 US unless you go to a trade show where they give them away for free. Or if you buy something from them or a dealer, they will give you one with your purchase.
This will work nicely with the clear acrylic to make a season 20 colour strip.
However If I really wanted to make it more authentic I would use Lee filters because they have dominated Europe for the past 50 years....
but I just happen to have one of the Rosco ones.

Green Magnetic detector thingy - a Fresnel lens from a 650 Watt Mole-Richardson light. (truth be told it could have come from an Arri light - I acquired it without the lamp part)
IMG_1132A.jpg
found some rubber feet, but I need a lot more

I'll recreate the Tardis Printer with an empty water bottle.

Wow! I love that Fresnel lens! Where did you find it? (I know you mentioned the light it came from, but did you have to get the light or did you just find the lens for it, like a replacement lens sold for those lamps?) And is it glass or a thick plastic of sorts? (I'm guessing glass since the lamp was 650 Watts?)

And yeah, those rubber feet do seem to be all over this console, and in different sizes. Fortunately they are one of the easier bits to find. Nearly every craft store has them.

My college has been systematically getting rid of these glass Fresnels because they are old technology - they are moving over to LED theater lights. I managed to snag a couple before they were trashed. (Sadly one of them broke.)

I've actually have had trouble finding rubber feet that look just right. These I took off from some equipment dating back to the 1980s that the college was surplussing.

Oh the pain, the pain. :P Don't these people know what those lenses are worth? Looking them up on line (Googling 'replacement Fresnel lens') and actually finding the "bull's eye" lenses like that, they're not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Rather than just trashing them they should have at least donated them, if they didn't want to sell them for fund raising. (My wife used to be in Theater when she was in college, and their group were always having to do fund raising.)

Sad to hear about the one that broke. Maybe you could cast a silicone mould from this one and cast an extra from clear resin before you permanently mount it in the console? At least then you'd have a back-up if needed.
