You can see one of the Glasgow boxes (outside the Botanical Gardens) using the Aerial View from http://maps.live.com.  Plain as day, right in the middle of this screen grab.

(If this is copyright, please feel free to remove it)

If you want to search for it, look for where Byres Road crosses Great Western Road.

Hi there, I was in Glasgow the weekend before Christmas and stayed in the hotel opposite the Great Western Road Police Box. I got some nice pictures in the snow thought you might like to see them.

It looks like the British boxes found south of the border.  I'd like to know why did the Scottish boxes differ in exterior appearances so much--ok, so they're blue..but, speaking from a design stand point, everything else is different--different windows, different floor dimensions, different roof construction--was it just so they could be different than their English counterpart (only)...or was there more to it than just this?  Any ideas?  Interesting that the red phone booths don't appear to have any marked differences north/south of the border.

This is mostly true, except they were slightly different. The Scottish K6 telephone booths actually had the Scottish crown added as a panel after 1953. This is because when Queen Elizabeth II took the throne she didn't like the Tudor crown design that was itself an Edward VIIs homage to his mother Queen Victoria. Liz II liked the designed of St Edwards crown and used that instead. Of course when they started to change this on the K6 boxes the Scottish demanded to use their own crown and the panel adjustment for either crown to be fixed in place was made. This also makes it easy to identify the age of a particular box.

I imagine the differences in the exterior are due to the contractor that cast them. I suspect that as the third design of Police box in service, that they just went with the standard pattern London set. The Met design was all curves and what not however. It would have been much easier to do the 45 degree angles that we see now.
But if you notice that all the communication parts are fairly generic. The lantern is a standard pattern used everywhere on regional boxes. The ericcson speakerphone panel common from 1931 to 1940-ish. It does shape the front panel differently, the teak door was changed to match that new profile.

You're right--the crown did change to meet the Scottish national pride!  It's all fun and games until someone's crown gets the shaft!  ;)  Where the crowns gilded...or just painted over red...been so long, I can't remember....

Hi all, Just to let you know my team have just finished a re-furb on the Botanics Box. I have not seen the finished product but this box had the most concrete deterioration of any box as it is covered on 3 sides by soil, hopefully the work done will give it another 75 years on the mean streets of Glasgow. It is now let as a coffee stall, so if your passing buy a wee cup of coffee from Andy and support the next box to be re-furbed.

Any word when we can see pictures of the refurbished boxes?

Well, my "research" is decidedly unscholarly, but from what I've read, there were different "Marks" of the original Gilbert Mackenzie-Trench design.  There was the Original Mk I, which is slightly different than the Mk II that the TARDIS is based on--mostly signage.  The door lintel signs are different, the phone instructions are on an exterior panel instead of inside the door, and a couple other things.

After the Mk II came a Mk III which had, IIRC, an externally accessible fire extinguisher--possibly an externally accessible first aid kit as well.  There may have been Mk IVs and higher, but I haven't read anything about them.  At any rate, it looks like the Scottish boxes are a later version than the iconic one the TARDIS was modeled after.
