More stuff I think you may or may not find useful - trying to get some discussion going and maybe inspire folk.
Again, I'll try and post some pics that show interesting aspects of the prop.

First, a really good scan of one of the 1980 birthday cards, taken during the location shoot for Destiny of the Daleks. Check out the state of the windows and just how knackered the whole thing was by this point, even though it was only 4 years old!

This next shot shows the season 16/17 beacon and the fact the base was painted black at this point.

I love these two pics for showing the box was seldom fully assembled. It's also interesting that the fresnel beacon was painted white:

The next pic shows that the modification of the process was organic - the lock is now on the left, but it's still the old doors and a black base. The lintel graphics have changed tho:

The box as it appears on 'The Lively Arts' documentary. Notice the beacon is missing.

This pic was straight on enough for me to draw some blue prints for the Newbery. Note the shovel key hole between 2nd and 3rd panel:

One of my personal faves of the modified box:

This shot shows the TYJ doors and is great for showing off the texture. I think the prop looks at it's best here.

There's a great shot of the Newberry box and "White Beacon" in Robots of Death.

I'll get a grab.

Fab capture! I have a black and white photo of a boating fresnel in exactly the same type of housing. I presume that this lamp was used on and off (when they could remember which box it had been dumped in!) til the end of the series. Either that or someone knew exactly where to get this exact type of fresnel beacon - if you search for them now at boating suppliers etc, they're never in a housing of this type.
EDIT: Here it is...

Yes I believe this lamp was put on the TYJ afterwards. Funny how they never lost it when the TYJ was in use :)

One thng I've noticed about photos from the shoot above featuring the prop and Peter Davison, is there's a small block on the base section against the corner post, visible in the above shot just to the right of PD's leg, presumably for the walls to sit flush against and prevent them from splaying ...

They did, yes.

No, funny that.

Oddly enough there is no back sign box for this prop.  See the side views in Robots of Death and Stones of Blood.

If you look at the pic from Fang Rock above, there's actually no back wall at all on the prop.

Just like the TYJ prop, this prop often had it's rear wall and sign box left off - The Horns of Nimon is particularly interesting because you see this as clear as day a number of times to the point that you can see right through it to the set behind because of the ill fitting black backing drape - which flaps about rather a lot.

I'm fairly certain that the construction method (and over all proportions) of this box made the inside rather cramped, so leaving the back off gives everyone inside much needed breathing space without it getting too personal.  If you had the Doctor and the companion just stepping out, there'd also be a third person in there too, a technician to operate the lamp and close the door behind the actors... actors weren't allowed to operate the lamp because of union regulations!  Typical really, but there you go.

Laughing at that, crazy but true. I got my a**e kicked for moving a mic position at maida vale that was placed in front of the wrong speaker cone on my equipment. Correct procedure was to tell the man in the brown coat to move it 6 inches to the left, not do it myself.

Rassilons Rod

For some reason I thought it was Fang Rock being discussed here, but obviously not... No clear pics of the back in that one...

However here are some pics of the box in Nimon. A good shot
showing the set through the back wall. And some others showing
the signage and so forth.

I just noticed about the base... This shot from Armageddon Factor suggests it was painted for Season 17 (not for 16). You did say
"season 16/17 beacon" But I just thought I'd clarify a bit :)

I'm still not convinced that the base was painted pure black as it makes no sense - why do it?

For the Key to Time season, in particular The Power of Kroll, the prop was stood in a marsh and the tide did come in, so it's possible that it could have got a bit dirty and soggy there and required a freshen up later... as the shot for Armageddon seems to indicate, but there it looks too clean.

Perhaps before shooting the next season, it was dirtied up a bit more, but just a little heavy handed as you can see the black wash fizzling out part way up the posts.  Obviously the base is the main area that will get dirty and will suffer the most abuse and damage.  I reckon it is still blue, but with an over egged dirty wash, plus real grime... but not pure black.

Rassilons Rod

Hang on a mo Purp... I've got some grabs to post ;) I'll edit this post when I can get the images into photobucket.

Edit: Seemed silly to post so many grabs and not do the whole season so here is one from each story. :)

Infact now I've done a few more grabs I can say exactly when it was painted black...

Destiny Of the Daleks: Blue

City of Death: Blue

Creature From the Pit: Blue

Nightmare of Eden: Black

The Horns of Nimon: Black

Shada: Black

Also, maybe interesting to note is that they probably did that "Get Well Soon" card just before Nightmare of Eden. Looks like the chalk dust is still on there...

I agree, Purp, it DOES seem an odd thing to do. But if its not black, its certainly VERY dark...
