Nothing to put yourself down for here.  Quite the opposite.  And in years to come, when anyone mentions Doctor Who, you'll be able to say " I built a TARDIS".

;D

Agreed. I shall wear my head high and build this TARDIS my way.  :)

And speaking of which, here comes the foldable part in my foldable TARDIS: Putting the panels together with the help of hinges.

And here come the bars:

I'm not so sure about the bars securing the foldable panels: I used thicker wood before, but then I couldn't fold them anymore without damaging them. So I used this rather thin spare plywood which isn't really effective. It doesn't really matter once the panels are stuck together, but until then it's a bit (understatement) wobbly.
I thought about metal bars, but I'm not sure if I wouldn't risk the panels to be damaged, if they fold anyway (due to the weight of the upper panel half).

Any thoughts on this? (Yes, (fanfare), I-do-everything-myself-girl is actually asking for help! Weeee!)

Watch me fold my TARDIS (la-di-daaa *proud*):

Was there a reason you couldn't hinge your doors vertically? That way you could hide your hinges behind the centre strips. They'd only be as high as your corner posts, and could double as interesting dividers in your lounge.  :P

Could be due to the space it gets stored in?

I would have thought that folding them vertically, sides together, centres out, using a piano hinge would make them take up less space than top to bottom.Only one door wide then. She still has posts to store, after all. Unless they break down into 2 parts too, like a tent pole.  ;D

I just noticed your tool wall.  My dad years ago did one very much like that and had me draw the outlines around all the tools.  Then again he was of German decent.

The divides might only be visible behind the uprights at least... The backboards' splits won't be visible at all, it is hidden by the horizontal stiles ;)

OMG IT' HIM! yes yes... I'm floating around still, waiting for my financial situation to get better before I press on, anyway enough about me.

Yes you could hinge the walls vertically and hide the hinge behind that center divide, that's what I was working on, doesn't even need to be a piano hinge, regular door hinges would work, as long as you only attach that center divider on one side so that it can open when you fold the doors.
However if there is not room to maneuver a long object in sillysparrowness' house then the horizontal way could work, though you will probably see the join between the 2 peices, do you have a pic of the section laid down with the paneling facing up?
You might want to consider a 3rd, lightweight hinge in the middle also btw, it would ensure that the middle of the peice stays together and doesn't warp or bend.

I am really interested to see how this one turns out, great work so far ;)

You all have a point there and I almost felt stupid for not even having thought about folding the panels vertically. But then I remembered the reason. It's not about storage space at all, as I don't mean to store it. It is always going to stay put in on of the rooms.
I'm concerned about the transport, and I mean within my house. I'm a small person, I'm not really strong and the panels are heavy (so much I can tell already). I want to move them over two narrow staircases without constantly bumping into the steps, the wall, smashing lampshades and so forth. The posts (not foldable) might be long, but they are also thin and quite light. If I carry only one at a time, I can control it. Not so with the panels. I need them to be as compact as possible, especially as I have four points in my house where I have to turn around a very narrow corner (staircases, again).

That's right! I knew the splits would be visible, but I couldn't think of another way to do it. Plus, I actually don't mind. I was told to not put myself down anymore, so I won't, but honestly, if you're looking for an elegant solution, I'm clearly not the person to ask... :)
I'm trusting in the paint to make the slits pass unnoticed. Everything (I build) looks better when covered in a thick layer of paint!  ;D

What, you mean, not everyone has a tool wall like this?! I'm shocked! :)

sillysparrowness

It is time! My build has moved on to the next level. Literally. To be able to assemble it, I had to move the TARDIS out of the basement because the ceiling would have been too low to have the roof section fit in.
So it moved (over the stairs, and yes, the folded panels are quite easy to transport) into the living room. Here are base and posts (the look beautifully wobbly, don't they?). No worries, the panels will hold them together...

And here comes the first panel!

Look, it's foldable!

There you are, that's a believable TARDIS panel (with only slightly visible joints and who cares, I'm building the shabby lookingTennant TARDIS anyway...)!  ;D

I definitely don't have a wall like that. Most of my tools get put in two of those large shopping bags.
My dad however did put everything up against the wall that way and we have no german heritage. Though we do live in the east of the Netherlands so Germany isn't that far away.

And if you use some sandpaper at the joints to make sure that it seems like one smooth surface then you will really hardly see them at all once you've painted it.

Excellent! All coming together nicely now!

I see you play bassoon :)
