I admit I'm perplexed by that info, it was my understanding (incorrect or otherwise) that Petwee's Sonic went on to be Tom Baker's, same item, just minus the lurid colour details... (and that the genuine Sonic was eventually stolen from John Nathan-Turner's office).  From the info I've managed to dig up via Google, the sonic found in an auctioned bit of Jon Pertwee clothing by accounts was an inaccurate exhibition piece rather than a screen-used design

Bonham's lied? ???  :o Nah. I also have vague memories of seeing it mentioned in a DWM article, on the lost Pertwee prop found in the jacket that was being auctioned. I can't remember anything saying it was an exhibition piece, just that it was the Pertwee sonic that was thought to have been lost, never to be seen again, and then found in one of Pertwee's smoking jackets as they were preparing it for the pre-auction photos. They had photos of the sonic as well. (Now I'm wishing I'd captured those photos. Frack me! >:()

They might still be on the doctor who news page if anyone can be bothered searching back through the archive

I wonder if it was the prop used in Inferno.  That had yellow and black coloring, but was different in structure.

Are you referring to the "Door Handle"? :)

Nope, no yellow that I can see on this...at least not any worth mentioning.

I think the inferno prop reappeared in the 3 doctors which is odd as the proper sonic prop had been used in the sea devils but the end bit is clearly bigger than the standard tip

That scene was shot outside on a heavily overcast day and the source lighting looked like a mix of artificial light and natural light bounced off reflectors.  The grey/white light of an overcast day on the moors would make an silvery reflective surface appear white on old style 1970's film.

I remember hearing about the sonic screwdriver prop being found in Jon Pertwee's jacket at auction on the radio. In this story the prop found was a pen with a toothpaste cap sellotaped on and sprayed silver. Someone had forgotten to pack the real sonic and a hasty replacement had been constructed for the shoot. It had been left in the pocket because once the real one had turned up this one was redundant. It stuck in my memory because for weeks afterwards my son pestered us to buy 'proper' toothpaste with a cap so he could make a 'proper' sonic screwdriver!

Is the device in Inferno even supposed to be the Sonic Screwdriver? I always assumed it was just an automatic door opener the Doctor put together.

Yeah, here's the device you're talking about. http://quartus.net/nbridges/images/bonhams.jpg

Rocket, I think you're right. The confusion on that 'door opener' may be the result of Liz Shaw using what looked to be the real SS for the same purpose later in the story.

Can't find a pic for the life of me though, and of course I don't have Inferno on disc yet to grab a screeny.

Just digging through posts and wondered if this was the auction that was referenced with the sonic screwdriver in the jacket that can't be found - http://www.3rddoctorcostume.com/2010/02/bonhams-costume-sales-previous-auctions.html from the Bonhams sale 15337 (6th March 2007), The Angels Star Collection of Film and TV Costumes...

why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

Isn't that the gadget used in carnival of Monsters used to open the floor plate?

Similar but no.

There is something likable about this prop, even made my own version based on it a while ago.
