That was researched a few years back from as many screen caps as could be assembled by the members of the RPF and then drawn up by Karl "Phase Pistol" Tate.  This is NOT an official BBC diagram, just a research result.

Outstanding research, Waz (and to Karl Tate as well)! This also looks almost like it's actual size.

I know it says "Not to scale" on it, but can anyone guesstimate how far off is it from the actual measured diagram?

The usual guesstimate is that the real thing is 8 inches long.

What good is a reference thread without proper screen caps?

Yes, one of the shots is of Jon Pertwee holding it but that image is from his final season and it is the same prop used by Tom Baker.  A different prop from the techicolor one Jon used most of his time in the role.

Hello....

When was the 'Pertwee' determined to be a different object? I've never seen any evidence to support that, and believe me, I've looked.

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated.

I remember reading somewhere that it was always the same prop, it was just re-worked a couple of times. I'm sure it was in a book I have, I'll see if I can find it.

The first Pertwee sonic was a different prop. It got "lost" which resulted in the new sonic that he used in his last season and was passed from Pertwee to Tom Baker. The original Pertwee sonic resurfaced a little over a year ago when Bonham's was auctioning off one of Pertwee's smoking jacket costumes. The "lost" sonic was in one of the jacket pockets, and was auctioned with the jacket as a "bonus" for the lucky winner.

So they were indeed two different props, though the same basic dimensions and design: just no yellow with black stripe section on the new prop.

Got a link?

I was of the belief that this >>> http://quartus.net/nbridges/images/bonhams.jpg <<< was the item found in the jacket pocket.

No, that wasn't it. It was the Jon Pertwee 3rd Doctor Sonic Screwdriver, with the yellow and black striped "barber shop pole" section. (I do know what his sonic looked like.) Unfortunately that auction was over a year ago and the link to the smoking jacket being auctioned, that the sonic was found in, is no longer there. I even searched the Bonham's web site hoping they would have an archive of the lot to show what it sold for, but nothing showed up for "Pertwee, 3rd (or Third) Doctor, Smoking Jacket, Sonic Screwdriver" or any combination thereof. Then I went and scrolled through every 'Doctor Who' lot they have on the site; all they have are 'Doctor Who' lots that have sold in auctions less than a year old, or are on the block ready to go. They don't even have the Tennant TARDIS that one of our member's friends won, or the Longleat console that one of our members won and beautifully restored.

I may be wrong (and someone help me out if you can), but I think this was also mentioned in one of the DWM issues. Most of mine are still in the storage PODS from when my water heater flooded the entertainment room so I can't go flipping through the issues to find the article. It does stick in my mind, though, because the article writer and listing on the Bonham's site at the time made a big deal about how everyone thought this prop had been lost forever, and was discovered in that smoking jacket pocket as they were preparing the jacket for photos for the (then) upcoming auction. The sonic was also photoed and listed as part of the smoking jacket "lot" - not being auctioned separately as a sonic screwdriver prop - and the lot description said the lucky winner of the jacket would be getting a bonus with the Pertwee lost sonic screwdriver.

Oh, I've no doubt that you know what the Pertwee sonic looks like. lol

But the image above came from the auction I thought you were referring to. I can't believe that noone snagged pics from the auction containing such a grail item...myself, had I seen it, would have emailed a request for more info on the item, and possible measurements from the Sonic. (It'd be worth a try, right)

That's not a sonic.  Looks like a medical tool. ;)

Actually, it might be the magnetic tool the Doctor used to open the metal hatch in Carnival Of Monsters.

By the way, it was my understanding that the barber shop sonic screwdriver was "lost" between Carnival Of Monsters and the next episode so they fabricated another one. That's why there are some distinct differences between that one and the next. I read that years ago, but I don't remember where.

I've always imaged when the prop guy made the replacement they didn't want the headache of the paint scheme, so we got a simpler version.
