First movie in the back yard.

Notice the width?  If you take out the steps under the sign housings and reduce the roof stacking you'd essentially have the full imposing size and width of the new series TARDIS.

My, she is a wide body, isn't she.  I know a small portion is hidden by rubble, but this near perfect quarter shot really brings out the width, just like on the new series box.

Here are some closeups of the main door panel in the first movie.




This shows the glint on the St. John plaque quite well (see separate St. John Ambulance thread), and the four screws slightly staggered on the main door handle.  Bad sanding job, too.




Later in the sequence with the panel almost directly square-on to the camera.

Using the last picture and knowing the actual size of the brass Yale lock face it should be possible to calculate the size of all the major panel components with an acceptable margin of error.  One can then use those measurements in other pictures to calculate relative dimensions of the rest of the box's components.

Great shot of the Yale lock from the first movie.

Yes, you can actually barely make out the "Yale" on the knob in the full-sized image.  It appears to be a standard iron-cased night latch or rimlock dating from the 40s to the 60s, before they switched to painted or patinaed cast aluminium.


Interior doors from the second movie.  Doors painted white now, but the same lock as in the first movie and note the brass twist-locking throw-bolt on the upper edge of the right door (also in the first movie).

Note that these shots of the doors show them to be the exterior prop doors simply rehung for the Control Room set.  You can make out the extra depth to the panel that holds the phone door and the additional mounding the acts as a ledge to attach it to (also visible in the lock pic above).



Hmmmm, Look familiar?  Similar shot from the new series Console Room.  Even looks to be exactly the same type of lock, just whitewashed along with the interior sides of the doors.

Yet another note of resonance between the Cushing Movie TARDIS and the newest beast in the BBC stables.

Yes, the "Traditional Model" Latchs available from Yale now are very, very close to what they had then.  Differences (beside materials) are mainly that with the 60s version there were: sharper details (partly a consequence of the harder materials used in making the housing); a bell-shaped latch release button instead of the present flat disk shape; a slightly smaller knob; and finally that the logo back then was "YALE" (in an outlined lenticular shape on the knob and in even well-spaced block letters on the cylinder) instead of the present "Yale".

I'd say a good 90% match, though.  Glad they still make them.

BTW - from what I can see, despite the low res in the one image I have, the new TARDIS looks like it might have an older lock (inside part, at least), despite the key in the publicity stills looking like a newer model with only one "wing" stop at the base of the bow instead of the old style, which had two (Yale changed their key blank pattern about 10 years ago) - but then it's probably just a copy using a newer blank.

Elsewhere in the Model Builds section I'm close to completing a small model of this box, based on plans I've drawn up myself.  I'm quite pleased with it, and I think I've managed to nail down a specific dimension on the box.

Although there are no full-on profile shots of the box in the movies (and the New Avengers episode), luckily most are long-shots with a bit of a zoom, which means there's no vertical perspective. So you can compare vertical heights of objects with pretty good accuracy.

Using this method with several of the shots, the vertical height of the sign-boxes seems to be about equal to 2/3 of the vertical height of each window pane (just the glass, not the white frames). 

The width of the inner sign looks to be as wide as the distance between the the outer edges of the windows (and hence also the panels).   OK you can't see that as accurately, but since that was the case with Met boxes (and I'm fairly certain this prop was based on the Met plans) I think we can assume it's the same here.

This may not give an absolute measurement of the sign box, but I think it does give a very good relative one, and with that as your starting point I think you can fairly accurately scale up the rest of the box's features from there.

Unfortunately in my own model I had to make a slight compromise halfway through the build, so my sign boxes don't quite conform to this.  They're a little too short.  Which is a shame.
