Have you ever seen something that really inspires you?  Makes you envious that you don't own it for yourself?  Well I was surfing the net a few months ago and I ran across the following images:

Judging by the way they look I think it is a design from Second Life.  Not sure who made the design or if it is based off of anything other than the secondary console room.   But it really grabbed a hold of my imagination and wouldn't let go until I opened Sketch-Up and started working.   I really fell in love with the console lay out and the controls.  A curious blend of the secondary console with the main console.  So I decided that when I build in the real world that what I have constructed in Sketch-Up will more than likely be what comes to life in the real world...    I am close to being finished, I just have a couple of things I want to add.  However the console itself is finished and ready to be seen.  Enjoy!

Now that would have been a nice way to have started off the New Series! (Either that or Series 5). It may have even been a better way to go with the 1996 TV Movie as far as the room goes. (The Movie console is great, but the room went way overboard.)

I'm usually a - well - let's say "semi-purist"... I prefer replicas of existing/past screen-used console props. However, every so often something like this or the Type 55 comes along and it makes me think 'Now that's a creative mind in action.' And I wonder why the BBC doesn't employ some of our members for their 'Doctor Who' design department. (Or why they don't poke around here for ideas!)

I mean, they reached out to the young crowd for a design for the "Junk Console" and that design was almost true to the original series, so much so that they made the console pale green! Just think of that they could come up with if they came to this forum for input.

Genius! What a brilliant composite design!

Of course, it draws on all my favourite elements, but... I just want to keep looking at this one. Great!

Splendid work and an absolute cracker of a design by handofomega.

The original design pics are of the 'Primary Wooden' Console Room as built and sold by HoO (Hand of Omega) designs on Second Life and is commercially available to buy and fly on there..
They have a full range of both canon and non cannon Console rooms, and a previous thread on here focused on their Third Doctor Console room.

Though the images don't show it, This Primary Wooden Console does infact have a Time Rotor built into it, that rises up during 'take-off' then continues with normal movement until you land, when it sinks down fully into the console again...The Time rotor itself is based on the standard Tom Baker design....

Exleo,

Do you know if the console design is his own or something that he cobbled together from an actual console.   When I found the images they were on someone's blog about Doctor WHO.  I didn't know who to credit them to.  I would love to find out more about the console itself.

Greetings. I'm the (sort of) original builder of the Wooden Primary. It's actually got a bit of a jumbled history to it, as it's a sort of frankenstinian bodge. The story goes somewhat like this:

Pre 2008: Dalek Drillon builds a "wooden secondary" console room on Second Life. It's a good, if somewhat simplistic build, but isn't very accurate to the TV stage set. Texturing is a simple flat woodgrain over every surface. The console is completely inaccurate.

2008: I get a copy of Drillon's build and begin to modify it, to try and make it more screen-accurate. About 75% of the original model ends up being jettisoned, and rebuilt. New texturing everywhere, entirely new console plinth, screen-accurate control layouts. The only parts of the original build still in extant are the wooden barriers and brass rails near the exterior doorway stairs.

2009: In a 2-fer, I construct Second Life versions of the console rooms, as seen in The Invisible Enemy, and Logopolis.

2010: In a moment of madness, I take the three console rooms, (Invisible Enemy, Logopolis, Wooden Secondary) and begin merging them into a single design.

The basic concept springs from a bit of flaky memory I had. I had recently sat down and watched Planet Of Evil, and when the scenes of the Doctor and Anti-Man in the console room were shown, they weren't what I remembered at all. I remembered Tom Baker, not just fighting Anti-Man in the console room, I remember it being the console room with the railings around the console, and that at one point they fell against them.  But instead, there was the white control room, with the main console. That got me thinking about the two consoles being mashed together into one.

So, I began mashing. The concept would be, the primary console room of the Tom Baker era, but with the motifs and design ideas of the Wooden Secondary.

The overall floorplan is that of the IE room. The sizing and spacing of the walls is from the Logopolis, with the Wooden Monitor cabinet, and interior door moved into the same positions as they occupy in that room. In the center goes the platform with railings, and the stairway leading up to the exterior exit.

The console itself uses the control arrangement of the IE, but with the "technology behind covers" concept of the wooden secondary. (and rotated so that the door control lever is just inside the doors, as per the Logopolis, rather than faces it from across the room, as per the IE) When all the panels are closed, it looks antique. Open the panels, and it's 70's era hi-tech. (radar sweep, oscilloscope, computer readout, and so forth)

I even added a "desk" panel, since the wooden secondary had those little cubbyholes. This was placed in the position of the big monitor panel on the console, so I stuck a little antique TV under the rollback cover, between the cubbies. (the screen displays a readout of "in flight" or "landed")

Also, as mentioned above, it does have a Time Rotor. When landed, the rotor is lowered shut, so the only thing showing is the wooden cylindrical cap, as per the wooden secondary. When in flight, the rotor rises into position, where it bobs up and down as per the IE and Logopolis.

I'm quite pleased with how it came out, and I'm enjoying your take on it. If you do end up building a real-world version of it, I'd be interested in seeing that, too.

As a proud owner of the 'Primary' on second Life I have to say it's an absolute beauty and very inspiring, so thanks cobalt for your hard work in getting it there :)

To Hand of Omega on this site, I am really liking what you have done to the Roof monitor above the Console, that is a very exciting addition....

handofomega

Exleo,

Thank you for the compliment!  I am glad you like what I have done.   The ceiling hexagonal piece was done to try something new.  I wanted "above the console" monitors as well as adding a monitor on the console itself.  The ceiling piece was set up to accommodate the monitors and yet be somewhat true to the original design I found online.  I wanted something that mirrored the console from above.  When I finished I noticed that the lighting area was only a few feet above the central column.   But for some reason it just looked right!

The reason the central column has a domed top is a throw back to the original secondary console room.  In one of my many fanzines and/or magazines devoted to the show it is stated that the small secondary console was originally supposed to have an iris on top that opened to reveal a clear dome that had brass instruments in it.  Basically the secondary console's central column...  So I wanted this design to have a central column that was a blending of the two.  I also tweaked and used the Hartnell column's innards.

handofomega

Cobalt,

Thank you for the history of your design!  It is always fascinating to hear how a design takes shape and why.

I have to say that I really, REALLY love the design you came up with.  If you have any close-ups I would love to see them.   I did change a few items on the console.  I added a hand rail that goes around the console.  Not sure why I did it other than I wanted to see more brass, LOL.  I did away with the roll top desk area in favour of a monitor screen.  A bit of trivia, the greyish/silverish panel to the right of the monitor screen is based off an electronics doo-dad (not a technical term) that I found at a yard sale.  It is to scale with the measurement on the console so I hope to use it in my real life build.  I did change the panel layout too as well as adding some lit up roundels to the base of the console.  Haven't really seen that done before and thought it would look nice.

I did change the walls too.  I went for a hexagonal room.   It played havoc with trying to get the stairs up to the main doors to fit "just right".  The I decided to stagger the roundels instead of lining the up.  This was a personal preference of mine.  The stained glass roundels are all from the secondary console room except for the one I designed based off the new series Time Lord symbol.  I just changed the colours of the stained glass to get unique pieces for every wall.

Although no one has commented on it, the tubes in the side walls are part of the bits not yet finished.  I wanted to add some mechanical/technical bits behind glass.  Something that gives the room a tiny bit of a time machine feel without loosing the Edwardian theme.

Thank you again Cobalt for inspiring me and for liking what I have done with your design.  It means a lot to hear that.

This is awesome!

Personally, i always preferred the wood design of the secondary console room to the "sterile white" of the main console room, but didn't like the tiny console much until recently.  Great way to combine it, on both versions!
