A few captures from The War Games, because the tenth episode takes place largely in the Tardis we get a good look at the console near the end of its life.

Have a look at the space rocket walls in this publicity shot from PATHFINDERS TO MARS (1960-61).  Co-written by Malcolm Hulke, it was produced at ABC by Sydney Newman and had Gerald Flood, George Coulouris and Bernard Horsfall among the cast:

The designer was David Gillespie and the walls have more or less the same appearance throughout the ship.

Recently I came across an ebay item where some one was selling multiples of a Handle that can be found on the 1960s console. Sadly the Item has ended - but I'm sure this will aid anyone trying to identify them.

The Listing was for "CHICAGO DAKA-WARE VINTAGE RADIO DIAL KNOB 2-3/8" FLUTTED LEO 1PC GC 4103" in the listing
Listed in categories:

It is interesting what you can find at ebay in the vintage radio parts section. Hope this helps.

I've got three of these (I think; I'l have to go through the bin and count everything again). I pulled them off of some the old equipment we were "surplussing" back in the late 1980s. They're in my "Hartnell Console Box" waiting for me to get a house big enough to copycat celation's console.

Just noticed something interesting about the knob on the radiation detector - it changes from story to story.

It's not the only one, Nate. A few of those larger knobbies got smaller as the series progressed.

What started out as the "Inverted 'T' Slide" (in the yellow circle) and the other large knobby (red arrow):
InvertedTknob.jpg

...by the Troughton era ended up being small twisty knobbies (as the well as the knobby on the Radiation Meter - white arrow - which actually looks more like just the stub where the original knob was mounted):
ShriveledKnobs.jpg
and the "Inverted 'T' part of that control (white circle) is gone. (I have no idea why this photo refuses to hold the color of the arrows and circles when I save it after annotating it, so like the Series I have to work with B&W!)

Yeah I do realize that by Troughton's time the Console was looking a little ragged  ;)

I was just trying to figure out how many of those radio knobs to buy on ebay if you wanted to make a 60s console. I'm still committed to making a Mike Kelt Console, But Just like galacticprobe  I too have a box in my attic where I store parts for a 1960s console. Right now if is full of unopened packages of Pingpong balls, some Rooster/Ckicken head knobs, and 4 of these Flutted radio knobs -I've ordered an additional 2 that haven't arrived yet. (I also have boxes with parts for various other Tardis consoles from the classic series.)

Well, scouring all of the images I've got of the console during the Hartnell years, I would say seven knobs.

(Not going in any particular panel order, however using names of controls as detailed in the Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly/Magazine article:)
InvertedT-Other.jpg
1 - Control board (operation of Tracking monitor... this knob, like the one on the next control, shrank over the years, but in the beginning was about the same size as the other controls I'm covering here.)
2 - Coordinate Input Control (works with Coordinate Programmer... this control's name and operation was actually taken from one version of the console and this control's description from a link that was on the "Rassilon, Omega, and that Other Guy" site, of which neither seems to be in existence. The DWM article has the Pertwee console control in its place and labeled as the "Time Sensor". This knob, as we've seen like the control above, shrank over time.)

TwoStageRematLevers.jpg
Two-stage Rematerialisation Controls:
3 - Materialisation Switch (the Primary Control that brings the "dissolved" atoms of the TARDIS out of the Time Vortex once she's reached her destination... used first in the landing process)
4 - Materialisation Switch (the second and final landing control... this control returns the TARDIS and everything inside from loose atoms back to their original state.)
These knobs remained like this until the refurb during the Pertwee years, when by the time Tom Baker took over the role they were just square "knobs"

PauseControl.jpg
5 - The Pause Control (I think we all know how this one works, and this knob also changed in the later years until this control disappeared altogether by the time of the Tom Baker refurb.)

RadiationDial.jpg
6 - The Radiation Dial (borrowed from your image, Nate, and as we've seen, this knob also changes sizes throughout the series, until this control also vanishes sometime between Pertwee and T. Baker.)

DematLever.jpg
7 - The Demat Lever (a.k.a. the Master Switch, according to the DWM article... this knob is the only one on the console to have a red disc in its center; whether that red disc is painted on or a piece of thin plastic glued in place? Well, it's anyone's guess.)
This knob I believe (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) kept its appearance - but losing its red center disc sometime before the Troughton era - until either the Pertwee or Tom Baker refurb turned it into a red ball knob... on a stick.

And that is all of those kinds of knobs I can find on this console. So if you're going for the Full Monty, so to speak, you'll need seven of those knobs for a Hartnell console, especially of you want it as it was when it started out. So you're just one knob away, Nate! (Which is more than I've got since I think I've only got three, but then when I was snagging them off of the equipment being scrapped, I didn't have access to the Internet, or a resource like TARDIS Builders at my disposal. And from what I could see "clearly" in the episodes I thought all I needed was three. I also didn't find that DWM issue until well after that equipment was long gone! But I'm concentrating on my 2005-2010 hybrid console for now.)

Hope this was helpful.

Thank you - for what ever reason I had imagined 5 knobs but as we can see the production team needed to swap or replace various bits from time to time.

I have no doubt that as the props people moved the console in and out of storage between filming that they'd lost knobs, so some swapping of the large knobs (except for the four "main" knobs on the Demat and Remat levers, and Pause Control) took place. So you could probably get by with just 5, or even 4, of the large knobs, and use smaller knobs on those other controls (the "inverted 'T' control", the one on the Radiation Meter, and the one on the "Control Board"), and still have a screen accurate Hartnell console.

But since you're only one large knob away from having all seven, I'd say go for broke; get that last knob and do the console up big time!

Rassilons Rod

One of the large knobs ended up on a small fader at some point too (the ones with the red and yellow balls on the end).
