hi everyone. i wasn't sure if i posted this already or if i just didn't go through but i was wondering wat everyone though of this idea. would a tardis look off if i used 4x4's as the corner posts?  sorry i can't tell you which tardis i am trying to make cause i really don't know all the different tardis's. i do like the smith box. i am trying to go for that style. prob won't be as tall and wide. i just don't care for the extra trim on the outsides of the corner post. i would like them to look solid. so i'm really just wondering if the 4x4's would look good or if they would look to small. thanks for any help and advice.

you'll definitely be off if you use a 4 x 4, which will actually measure 3.5 x 3.5. It would be really off a Smith box.

Using a 6 x 6 (actually 5.5 x 5.5) would be closer, but then you're talking about some serious weight. You could get an 8 x 8 (which is 7.5 x 7.5) and cut it down to an actual 6 x 6, but you're looking at an awful lot of work there, and even more weight.

A hollow post can "look" just as solid as, well, a solid post if it's built right. After all, many of the tall ships' wooden masts aren't solid; they're built like barrels, out of (granted huge) staves, but they're just as strong and solid looking as those older ships whose masts were solid, only the hollow ones are much lighter (and believe it or not, stronger). So don't discard the possibility of building a hollow corner post. It could save you a lot of weight and grief in the long run.

That's where someone is hosting a duplicate of an older version of the simple plans I drew. After much photo study and tidbits from Purple and others, a never version was created. It will more closely resemble the Brachaki model with the updates:
http://www.doctorwhoscarf.com/drwho/brachacki.pdf

Other plans are linked elsewhere in this forum.

As for the corner posts of the Brachaki and Yardley Jones boxes, the revised rule of thumb is that they're most likely 6.25 to 6.5 inches wide. The TVM box has 6 inch wide posts.

sorry for the questions but i do have just one more. on a tennant eccelston box (i prob spelt his last name wrong) but are the post smallet on that box? i do like both tennant and smith boxes but i was also thinking about just building it and seeing what it turns out like. i do like the solid corner post. there my fav. i have a drawing i made up on how i want my tardis to look like. just no measurements on it. if i can figrue out how to add photos i'll add it.

drew30

sorry i just remembered i'm using a new comp so i don't have the pic i made. i'm thinking about just building it and seeing what it turns out like. any objections to that?

drew30

thankyou all for all the great help. i love everyones builds on here and it is making it so hard on how i want to create my tardis. lots to think about still. but i'm sure i'll get tuns of support from everyone on here once my build begins and i start posting pics. but once again tankyou all for all your wonderful help.

heres a pic of what my plans look like sofar. still trying to figure out a few numbers tho. but this is my general idea of how i am gonna build it. i removed the pic of the plan due to a window error that dino pointed out.

galacticprobe

You may want to revise your window plans. There are only 6 panes in each window, rather than 9.

i'm gonna start a build thread. i feel thats where this should all be posted. i am gonna post my tardis plans there now that i have fixed the windows in the plans.
