Thanks, Dr. Iz! I've been testing the Iris stain today, and, am actually very impressed by it. I painted one of my doors to get a proper feel for the colour. In daylight, it is a different shade to the Subaru, but still very mush a "Smith" shade, sort of dark blue, but that richness is still there, and, the effect on the colour at night is almost identical. An issue I am having with the Iris is that, we were right, it, understandably, doesn't like udercaots, in this case, my MDF primer. I have discovered that by layering it on think, and giving it several coats, it does start to look the part, and starts to settle on the paintwork a bit better, as the first coat it just ran off the top. I think it may look nice if I can do it properly, but I will have to use varnish or something, kindly suggested by exleo on my build thread, to protect the colour.
Still, I'd still loke to go for the Subaru colour if possible. I reckon that I could probably get away with one coat of blue, or perhaps two, if I spray it over a dark grey primer, and then use varnish to protect the colour. It is expensive, but I'll look into it.
You say that one gallon goes a long way. I know this may be asking a lot but could you give me an estimation how many gallons you would need for one coat of a TARDIS please? This is a bit of a foggy area for me, and I'll have to look into the mothod you used to to it. I'd imagine that diluting it to use in an air gun also adds quite a bit to the quantity?

Phil - the price was $107 for the reduced gallon, ready to spray.  I am not sure of the reduction mix ratio.  I could always check with the supplier. He told me that "ready to spray" is just that!

Superrichi1a - As far as the number of gallons it would take to spray a full size TARDIS, hmm... I don't know exactly myself.  I have not built a NST yet, plans are in the works for this Spring.  I painted my TARDIS'y police box with traditional latex/emulsion paint.  I used approximately 3 gallons in total if memory serves me correct.  The price of a gallon of conventional exterior latex pain here is about $30.  By spraying the test piece of wood that I have posted on this thread earlier, it took maybe 3-4 oz of paint by guesstimation.  I hope this helps.  I don't claim to be an expert here at all.  I wanted to track down the precise color of MS NST.  I think the color is spot on!  I hope this helps!  Cheers, Jon

Actually, yesterday, I made te decision to go with the stain. I did look at the Subaru colour, but, it was just too expensive for an NST. There are some comparison pics on my build thread if you're interested to see the difference. The colour is almost spot on, the only really noticable difference as far as I am concerned is the way it absorbs into the wood - the Smith leaves a more noticable grain, but, I think they are actually very similar

Copy that. I'm using Iris stain on my box, as i can't afford the overpriced paint. It looks very nice, and is alot cheaper...

Bringing this back around with some paint costs.

I did purchase a gallon of the Subaru Blue paint specified by Doctor Iz. It was $137.95 plus a gallon of reducer was $24.95 more.

I think this is going to be plenty paint, actually could have used 3 quarts and been safe (I estimate, but I'm not done painting yet.)

I'm also painting the inside black, not blue.

I'm applying the paint just like painting a car, but without any clearcoat. The paint is a metallic material and has a nature sheen to it once applied. I'm putting down one coat right on the wood, defuzzing it with a scotchbrite pad, and then one more coat on top of that. I'm mixing the paint 1:1 with the reducer and adding no catalyst. I put 4 coats on the base.

Also are we 100% sure that the Subaru Paint is what they used for the Matt Smith Box? I was reading a woodshop magazine and they had an interesting article about Milk Paint. Interstingly one of the samples of wood they painted looked pretty damn close to the grain and look of the Matt Smith box.

Now I know DRIZ did his test sprays. But just curious if indeed the Subaru Paint is 100% sure.

Does anyone know the Hexadecimal value of the paint?

Here's what I know....

The paint on the smith tardis, the bbc promo one PMC photographed, and the one in a Doctor Who magazine I have that Wayne sent over here, all have a metallic quality to the paint. As does the Subaru paint Doctor Iz received. Purpleblancmange told me he knows the paint was sprayed right on the bare wood. I am unaware of any other kind of paint you could brush or wipe on that would finish with the same quality. This metallic quality makes the grain much more visible than you'd have with another paint material. When I mentioned the paint Doctor Iz received, Purple was slightly coy about it, not directly answering that he knew how that came about, but not exactly innocent either.

I'm very happy with how it's looking compared to the reference I've seen.

If Pruple is being coy about it - here is my not so coy approach :

-The paint is the closest thing we have seen so far, matching the prop in pretty much every detail.
-BBC Wales are known to have purchased several litres of "Subary Liberty Blue", and, with a match as close of that, I highly doubt it was used for anything but the TARDIS.

Phillip. VERY jelous of you lol. I love the Subaru colour, it's just that it is really to expensive for me. The Iris is nice, but I just prefer the Subaru. Like Scott said, any chance of some pics?

Daniel, I don't know if my previous attempt at a post worked so forgive me if this is a duplicate...
I captured the color swatch from ...http://www.automotivetouchup.com/choosecolor/choosecolor.aspx?year=2000&make=Subaru&model=All%20Models
... then determined its RGB values with Microsoft Paint, R:0 G:51 B:102,
then ran this through a RGB-Hexadecimal converter and came up with 003366. This is assuming that the original color swatch is accurate, very unlikely though.

Just to throw someting else in here, if you were building a Tardis that would be permanently housed outside and used the Subaru blue paint then what else could you do to weather proof the Tardis??

Put clear over it, just like a car, except you'd probably want semi-flat, not gloss.

Where did you find a quote for $107?  I was quoted just the other day for $347 a gallon (and that was me asking for it reduced for a sprayer).  Also, would it work to have it put in a spray can if I don't have an air compressor or spray gun?
