For anyone who's interested in the Hartnell interior, I thought I'd share this. I picked it up at a slight discount (shop model) on my birthday 2 weeks ago.

I haven't known the name of the object until now. I believe this might be about half the size of the one in the Hartnell console room.

Ah its the same size as mine :)

Yeah, well technically I'm an ex-uker and only recently. But then I've been banging on about that often enough LOL :)

Well I'm looking forward to seeing it. My own PC hasn't arrived here yet... but I may get to see it before then. Have to check with the missus...

I have seen these at my Renaissance Festival in the fall.  The ones they have are UBER-expensive!!!  It is a very nice piece you have there RR.  It would look good in ANY console room, very nice find.

Myself, I am looking for an old ticker tape machine.  I think it would make a fantastic Fault Locator for my console room.

Uber expensive? well this one cost me £20, down from £30 :)

So perhaps if its half size we're normally looking at about £60?

Very pleased with my purchase anyway...! :D

You misunderstand Marc.  I meant that the ones I have seen at my local Ranaissance Festival are expensive.  The vendors try to gouge their customers since they are one of the few places to buy such merchandise.   ::)  Tis unfortunate, but what can we do???

Interestingly/incidentally/amazingly/ I was just watching Human Nature and the exact object that you have (same size I think) is in Mr SMith's study - roughly 23:10 through the show when he's looking for a book for the young psychic kid.

I can't believe that the set dressers's were doing a tribute to Hartnell, but see it more as proof of being simply very Doctor-y - good purchase!

:D

Strictly speaking it's an armillary sundial. You can tell by the arrow which is the gnomon. Though the hour lines are in an unusual position, on the base rather than inside the equinoctial ring. The one in the tardis was a sundial also. It clearly has hour lines on the inside of the equinoctial ring, where an armillary sphere properly speaking (a teaching instrument) would have the signs of the zodiac on the OUTSIDE of the ring. The tardis sphere is also missing the small circles denoting the tropics which are optional on a sundial but essential on a teaching armillary. Nevertheless this means you DO have the authentic item and £30 is pretty good going as they can be rather expensive. If anyone is interested in getting hold of one just search "armillary sundial" on ebay, and with a bit of sifting you should find some of the more reasonably priced ones.
It would indeed be a very nice complement to a console.

No, I got you :) People do tend to fleece people not in the know quite often. Its lucky we have a community here that can help eachother avoid that in the things we are interested in :D

Ah... Um... not quite seen this yet... Thanks for reminding me to obtain it ;)

Yes, I remember the conversation in the shop. Proper Armillary Spheres have moving parts so that you can align the arrow with stars you're tracking. The sundial versions are basically just decorative (certainly in this case.).

Most of the ones in the shop (mini ones) had the numbers inside the ring on the horizontal plane. The clock numbers on my base may also be strangely aligned cos I didn't pay attention when I reassembled it LOL :)

Ah yes, the shared curse of we-nonUKers...

Well if someone obtained a copy at around 23:10 they might have seen this...

Can anyone tell me (rassilonsrod, I'm looking at you particularly here...) whether the armillary sphere was always on top of the eagle stand? It almost looks like it's one huge object, but it's difficult to tell.

Have we ever seen one without the other?Edge01.jpg

Rassilons Rod

Off the top of my head... I *think* it was always on the eagles.

However there may have been other things on the eagles at other times... (I don't have my data drive plugged in right now so I can't be sure... but I think the porcelain Chinese dog was on there in the Pilot Episode... I'll have a look shortly - Keep your eyes peeled this evening). :)

Found this one, although it looks slightly different to the one on the eagles...

Here's a sphere on the column pedestal...
0431.jpg

Rassilons Rod

Ah... MarkOfRani, you beat me to it! :)

But I've had a look through and this is what I have figured out.

Season 1: When it appears it's always on the Eagles.
Season 2: When it appears it's mostly on the Eagles.

  • Except for Web, where it's on the column pedestal (as pointed out by MarkOfRani).

  • Except for "The Watcher", There is some sort of skeleton clock on the Eagles.

Season 3: It's really hard to tell much for Season 3... Though I suspect it probably spends most of it's life there too...

Season 4: It's definitely on the eagles in Power.
