I believe that is the MK I TARDIS.  The Mark II is with Andrew Beech.

Again. Remember. Working prop. Not always treated with respect, as with most working props.

Hi all

I had the privilege of visiting the BBC and guess what I found parked there..:

FRONT-tardis-1.jpg
FRONT-tardis-2.jpg
FRONT-tardis-4.jpg

I think it must have been there for the benefit of visiting audiences, as it was next to the audience entrance just inside the main courtyard.
It's looking very worse for wear in some areas, especially the base, and the paint job it's been given (for Children In Need, I think..? EDIT: Blue Peter, according to the Tardis History website) but it was great to see the real thing - I felt like a big kid (what's new?!)  :D
EDIT#2: to avoid confusion, this post was migrated from another board - the original post date was some time in 2007.

cheers,
Chris

QuoteMark 1's base was about 3" tall, it still is - Mark 2's base was very nearly 4" tall to start off with.  Mark 2 ended up being taken out a lot more on location and the base was often cracked, chipped or split when being set up, therefore it was trimmed down to tidy it up.  During it's later years, it (the base) ended up being shorter than Mark 1's.

Mark 2 was the one that was used in The Happiness Patrol and was painted pink, the paint is still there to this very day.  Mark 1 has the front sign box graphics screwed into the front of the boxes by one screw per corner - very visible from the outside - check out Silver Nemesis...

The other obvious features to tell the boxes apart are the door furniture,  Mark 1 has the locks above the handles on both door sets, which it still has - Mark 2 has them the other way around, again, still there to this very day.  Don't forget that both props had alternative lock door sides, the arrangement of handles and locks were the same on both sides on both boxes, just switched around... eg. Mark 1 has the lock on the right door on the front and on the left door on the rear side - as does Mark 2.

:-) You wouldn't believe how closely BBC security were watching the box and anyone who went near it - my friend works there, was wearing a BBC ID badge, and even he got asked what he was doing there..! Now that it's been replaced by a NST, god knows what security measures they might have installed - CCTV, guard-dogs and machine-gun nests probably..!  ::) :P

No-one expects the Purple Inquisition!  Luckily, my ingenious disguise works every time.   ;)

And here's what my wife sings when she knows I'm on a mission:

(to the tune of Santa Claus is coming to town)

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Purple B is coming to town

He is making a list
And checking it twice
Gonna find out what's wrong and imprecise
Purple B is coming to town

He sees when you are cheating
He knows if specs don't match
He knows if props are genuine or not
So you'd better watch your back.

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Purple B is coming to town

Yeah, well it was mildly amuzing the first time.  Not quite so sure any more.

What, there's a TARDIS prop in distress?  Quick Violet Girl - to the Purplemobile!

So basically all the smileys on all the forums are just photos of you gurning?  ;D
In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

Shouldn't the smileys be purple in color?  Otherwise we could have an imposter in our midsts. ;)

Wow! Demat, how wonderful to see the real thing!

But how could the beeb not be treasuring it and keeping like a museum piece? especially with all the new interest in the series.
It's such a shame.

Do you think it sits there every day? I'd love to see it.

Enviously,
TG

Actually, Andrew Beech has the Mark 1 - but he thinks it's the Mark 2... I've told him a dozen times, yet he still believes that he has the second box "Built for Logopolis."

The fact of the matter is that he has the original build with the paper work from the redressed Newbery prop.  There is one very easy way to tell the two apart - something in the way that they were built - which gives it's true identity away.  He has the first...unfortunately.

Hi TG

I don't think it's always kept outdoors, there's  a few videos on Youtube of it inside in storage. I think they had just wheeled it out for the benefit of show audiences - as it was next to the audience entrance. I was really shocked at the condition of it - they should really preserve it! But I was very happy to see it at long last :-)

cheers,
Chris
