Personally, I'm still relatively convinced the existing panels were reused. Cos they layouts are basically the same... Except new painted lines and small changes.

I can believe it was built out a bit though.

Prompted by this discussion, I've finally got around to importing the [ref topic=1025]Console Measurements[/ref] topic from the old forum where we worked on figuring a lot of this out. It's a bit colourful in places...

I'll just re-iterate the reasons I feel that the console has been built out and up between Inferno and Claws of Axos, if you'll indulge me...

  • Using 3D, and measuring against existing measured elements (meters, central basket, etc.) I can't estimate the width of the early panels to be bigger than 42-43" - a fair bit less than the later measured panel width.

  • The circular black meters sit about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch lower on the later panels than on the earlier panels - suggesting that a plywood panel has been laid on top of the old and holes been made to allow these meters to reach through.

  • The controls on the new panels sit (for the most part) further back from the outer edges of the new panels.

  • The controls on the new panels are in a slightly different configuration from the old panels.

  • The edges of the newly refurbed console show bolts/screws holding them in place - and are also unbattered - unlike the earlier visible edges.

  • The top edge of the early panels appear to sit below the collar surrounding the central column. The later panels appear to sit above.

So - it feels to me that in order to refurbish, the console had the controls removed, and saved for re-use where possible. (It seems for example that perhaps the black switches were damaged or fell apart at this point, as the later ones are solid non-working versions) The bare console had the edges and the panels re-clad, then the controls were replaced in pretty much their old positions.

Result - a console which looks essentially the same, but with new shiny paintwork; updated and "modernised" controls; and is overall slightly larger.

I know many people go with this theory now, but just for those unbelievers...  ;)

Oh, good stuff to chew on here. I guess the next thing would be some comparison photos of the elements you mentioned :)

Okay - stolen from the Pertwee console reference thread:

and from the Mind Robber ref thread:

It certainly seems to me that the distance to the edge of the old console is the same as the distance to the edge of the panel of the new console. I.e. new edging added; new panel fits over old panel and old edge.

I can't see much there to be honest. Not doubting you but I just can't see it from those refs. I was expecting to look for frayed edges and so on...

That said, I am stuck viewing on my phone till probably Friday. I will look again on a larger screen than that of my trusty old N97...

Um, re-read my reply at the bottom of page 1 on this thread. I fixed a math typo, but this subject has already been tread and retread. Purple more or less gave the dimensions we're looking for. The explanation seems satisfactory given the source.

Sorry I didn't acknowledge your previous post, lespaceplie.

It's very true - we did have this discussion with Purple, who agreed with the theory, as you've said.

No problem (and no drama). I feared it had been missed whereas Purple's input usually cinches any question.
