I just stumbled across this large lamp by Avalon and thought it might be useful to someone.
It comes as a hanging lamp or a post top.[attachid]Fresnel.jpg[/attach]fresnel2.jpg

What would the Doctor do?

mordrogyn

I wouldn't call that useful....

I'd call that PERFECT for anyone making Matt Smith's box

compare to:

matt-smith-tardis.jpg

Just cut off top and add weather cap from Tennant TARDIS et voila!

That's exactly what I thought, Paul. Maybe, that's exactly what they did, although the 9 3/8 diameter makes that seem incongruous. I wonder if there's a slightly smaller version of this lamp.

Yes, had a little search of the website and they do one that comes in at 6.6 ins width. The weather cap of of the Guardman (Tennant) Tardis is about 6.8 ins. I reckon Cathlyn has found the actual lamp used on the Matt Smith Tardis

mordrogyn

I didn't actually look at the dimensions...

For anyone building a Matt Smith TARDIS, I found this anchor lamp on ebay.  The price isn't too bad.  I've seen much worse.  I'd buy it myself, but I'd be in trouble with the wife.   :(

AHHHH I need it, but have a small budget :(

Does anyone know of a lamp that is cheaper? and the right size?

Just keep hitting the second-hand and antique shops, Cog. Even for me, if I could put out the money for this, I'd have a horrible time cannibalizing it for a Smith TARDIS lamp. (Coming from a nautical heritage like I do it would be like sacrilege.)

I'd look for a suitably-sized lens for a reasonable price, and then try to cobble the rest around it using wood, small metal rods, and any other bits to make it look like Smith's. It might cost the same in the end, but paying for it bit by bit is easier than forking out that sum all at once for something that needs to be torn apart and rebuild anyhow. (As I say: "Sacrilege!")

I found this lamp today. Looks like it could be used, maybe just add some handles to the sides?

Now that one could work, and since it's not an anchor lamp I'd have no problem hacking away at it to get the look for the 2010 lamp. You should be able to find quite acceptable handles at any hardware store (plain, tubular drawer pulls could work - they do come in different lengths and the "modern" ones have the screws that could be put through the lamp's housing, so they wouldn't show once the handles were in place).

Hasn't anyone pointed you in the direction of the New Haven lamp yet? It's a very similar, cheaper alternative that requires little to no modification to achive a good result (although the get it right you do need to change the roof of the thing, but on the whole even if you don't it looks abseloutly fine). It's slightly slimmer than the anchor, and the rivets are different, but, this really isn't noticable unless you compare it side by side with the real deal. It's actually the same lamp the Beeb Props Departement used on the Promotional Material Box, it was that similar.
Isn't it how ironic that we have to think of solutions out of the box, in order to build our boxes a lot of the time?

Aye I have, but I dislike the way it has to be modified. As I feel it looks so close, yet so far, it looks "wrong". Plus there is a large size difference between the two. I'm thinking about getting the fresnel of a cheap lamp and building the top and bottom parts of the lamp, as all options the top and bottom look too slim.

Ah, the "scratch-building" approach! Not a bad way to do things. If you do go this route please be sure to take lots of photos along the way for the Build Diary. I'm sure we'd all be interested in your work. Good luck with your build. You might want to check this place for the lens (info courtesy of cathlyn847); he just might still have some available:

I do have an extra Promo Lamp if any one is interested :)

Sadly I'm in the UK, so postage will be high. Thank you for saying however :)

I hope someone else can give it a well loved home.
