Strangely enough I think it's more to do not being backlit.  The window bars on my TARDIS look wider when they aren't backlit.  Kind of an optical effect when lights come from behind the window bars.

The effect of the white bars on a black background will make them stand out and look wider too.  It's a combination of factors I think.

I will miss the TARDIS being lit up, though.

I see your point, but in terms of the over all shape and dimensions, it's the same as the Mk2 NST.  Yes it's a new build with a slightly different construction technique and it's also not as heavily weathered as before, but all the changes are pretty cosmetic.

It's a bit like the differences between the two TYJ props or the differences between the Brachacki original and Brachacki Refit.  We're now in a situation with the NST that we're just getting variations on a theme, a bit like the Windows OS or even makes of cars.  I used to have a VW Scirocco MkII - that was completely different in look from the MkI, but mine was the limited edition MkII with a unique front light array, it was still called a MkII, but had an extra tag (which I can't remember now) to differentiate it from the previous edition.

If anyone thinks that calling the new prop a Mk2.1 or MkII.I is complicated, then what hope do we have for really complicated things.

Just my opinion of course and no offense intended to anyone who thinks otherwise.

Now, if we'd had a change a bit like this, then to me something along these lines would warrant it to be called a Mk3 as the changes are enough to call it a whole new model - in terms of design.

Don't suppose she could be called the NS5 (season5) or NSMS (matt smith)....
for me I would love each Tardis linked in name to it's timelord(s)...
I think she's beautiful. Love the color, and the intense wood grain makes her look as if made of oak.

I'd sooner just call it the 2009 box, and ditch the Mk numbering altogether.

I concur with Crispin. let the old way of naming stay with the classic series.
Let the new series Tardis have it's own identity.
I still would like the name linked to the timelord someway...

Very interesting (if somewhat anal ) discussion about what to call the thing. But I guess the name is kind of irrelevant as long as we all know what we're talking about.

But having said that... if this new TARDIS is indeed a totally new build, with just a few minor changes to the last version, then can't you say exactly the same thing about the MkII? In other words, if that version (which looks pretty much identical to the untrained eye) was different enough to be called a MkII instead of a MkI.I or whatever, then why shouldn't this one be the MkIII? And if being from the same mould isn't enough to deserve a new mark... then why is the Yardley-Jones MkII so-called?

Just looking at the way the grain is showing through there, I'm wondering if its actually been painted at all -  is it not merely a blue wood stain? Would paint show the grain in that way? I'm really not liking this prop.

Oh for pity's sake!  Let's just call it the Mk3 then and have done with it.

Meantime, it does look like a stain, but who knows until we get some further decent shots of it.

OK its the mk3, so anyway overall not keen don't like the colour never been keen on white  window frames (sorry to those who do) or the st john's badge even though i'm a member. like the lamp and its over all size though..
I know they change things so people buy new toys like the new sonic screwdriver

That fourth Purple re-version looks fabulous! Amazing what difference thicker windows and a decent roof make.

I've been at a bit of a loose end today, so have been fiddling with the image posted earlier (and again tweaked by Purple). All I've done is reduce the size of the windows and panels.

Hmmmm not too sure what I think of this new/reworked Tardis. Guess I will have to see what it looks like on screen when the show starts season 5.

I have spruced up my original 3D model with the new paint job and lamp, I include a pic. I have also created a modified version with the extra roof stack and thicker window frames.

seeing them side by side like that i kinda lean towards the original nst.... the extra step on the roof is a big change in the overall look of the box but the nst is huge already and adding an extra 3-4 inches in height would create a lot of problems with filming (i'm sure). my build is scaled down a bit and only fits in a few places indoors. i'm thinking that if they wanted to add an extra step on the roof they'd pretty much have to do a complete rebuild.

I don't know if this is true or not but someone on Gallifrey Base posted the following.

"A friend of mine runs an auto factors in Pontypridd, not far from the Upper Boat studios. He's just had an order from a member of the production team for paint for use on the TARDIS prop. The colour? Liberty blue - a Subaru colour."

Is anyone able to confirm this story?  I did a check on the paint name and couldn't find it but I was hoping someone else may be able to double check.

I'm not sure this is from the same mold. In fact, I think it's a timber construction.

Besides the obvious details (white windows, fresnel, etc.), notice that the posts are wider. They're probably 15cm wide. The front doors's dimensions seem to have been cleaned up a bit (more evenly spaced with timbers routed before assembly).

I realize that wood texture can be created in the mold, but the finish appears to be open grain with a patina applied. If it is faux bois, it's awfully good.

Not the same mold, same construction as Tennants, including the MKII wider corner posts, introduced last season (I think). The routered panels were for sure done correctly this time for a MUCH nice look.
