Baffled on the post dimensions, can anyone help me on this?

6x6 is pretty much the norm for all but the NST which started out narrower but in it's latest incarnation (and the refit just before) were widened to about 5.5 which is actually the width of a 2x6 or 1x6

Thanks for the info. Now all I have to do is make them look right (or as close to that as I can)

It also looks like I might wind up building the Tardis around the door design hence it might wind up being slightly bigger

A few years ago Glen Walker assembled a fantastic manual (in PDF) for building your own TARDIS, and it covers several methods for building the corner posts. You can download his manual through a link on Scarfwearer's site:

It should be noted that as fantastic as that tutorial is (it really is the perfect way to do those posts) if you are considering an NST (2005-2010) the posts have no bevel (is that the word? It's late over here, for me at least) - they are essentailly square blocks (or a perfect L shape) - this is a problem I'm trying to overcome with my build - you would have thought the old style corners would be way harder with their fancy corners, but no. At the moment, a block of wood is all I can think of.

I think isomorphic is referring to the "quarter round" molding on the edges of the Classic TARDISes' corner posts when he refers to the "bevel", and that the "TARDIS Builder's Guide" doesn't cover the New Series TARDIS' corner posts, which look like simple square posts.

It shouldn't be too hard to adapt the post construction from the "Guide" to suit the NST (operative word being "shouldn't"), but I haven't tried building any posts yet. (It's enough these days just for me to move about the house, much less start building a TARDIS.)

I guess it would come down to adjusting the measurements of the boards' width to compensate for the space where the quarter round would go.

This is how they are built as just a hollow box of 4 equal sized boards and then the depressions you can see in the posts are routed out.

Ermm... what exactly is that a picture of?

sorry, the black background on the forum didn't work well with that sketch. it's a top view of the column. 4 long boards attached into a post and an indication of the part that's routed out.

Actually, on the wooden TV Props, it's only 2-sided, not 4.  They are just the two outside faces only.

Actually, when you look at the reference photos of the 2005 box in this thread (http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=1577.0) under the TARDIS Exterior board (2005 sub-board), you'll see that the posts do have four sides. In the first photo in that post you get an overhead shot of the box and the posts don't have their tops yet, showing they are hollow, and you can see that they do have four sides. From the way the box appears to be assembled in that photo it only shows the two outer sides of the posts.
