That was done back in the late 80's, I think.  Or is it the 70's?

The alkaline nature of the concrete prevents the rebars from rusting, once that's completely gone there's not much that can be done. Thus says my engineering consultant and this is certainly what was happening at Crich but according to Wikipedia there are other forms of concrete cancer including water getting into the cracks and freezing which might better fit the symptoms here.

I had an email exchange with someone at Newport City Council in July this year, who took some preliminary action. Apparently the box was removed from the Buildings At Risk register after the repairs in 2004 and will be back on the list this year. I forwarded them contact details for Ward Westwater who has been involved with rescuing other police boxes.

I got a reply back from the Conservation officer at Newport, who says the Estates Dept is working with the Building Maintenance Dept to secure repairs. So, fingers crossed, some good will happen.

New member on TR2 and erstwhile friend of Robert posted this picture on flickr yesterday

It seems the restoration of this box must happen very soon, if it's not too late already

Was there a problem fence or shouldn't we ask?

The problem fence? Well yes, but there was a solution step-stool. I figured the natives probably weren't quite ready for the Scarfwearer ladder. I was able to reach with the tape measure over the top of the fence.
As it was the natives did just what you'd expect them to do when watching a strange guy hanging around a police box: they walked on by. :)

Brilliant! That's very good to see.

That is good news. Its wonderful how the programme has elevated a piece of street furniture into something so special that, out of all the other grants given there, it gets all the coverage.

Former police telephone box, Somerton, Newport(£10,500)
An "extremely rare survival" in Wales, the former police telephone box is "much loved by the local community" and known locally as 'the Tardis'. Money will go towards conservation repairs.

---

Its fantastic they were able to secure funding. They have 10 thousand pounds for the repairs, that is a lot of money!

However the line "conservation repair" job says to me that they don't intend to give it the full overhaul. Then again if it can be done by the same people who fixed up the Glasgow box on Wilson Street it just may turn out quite nice.

I wonder has anyone managed to source photographs of this box while it was in use?
I tried of ages to find some sort of original condition photo but only found more recent photos. It is as if this box made no photographic record during the entire 20th century.
