Ok, I did have the Titling version. What do people think looks best?

Perpetua Titling looks the most like the Brachacki Original (white frame), it sits right wit he spacing (sometimes it helps better to look at the spaces between the letters rather than the letters themselves)

BUT it seems to have changed to just Perpetua by the time of the weathered 1963 sign (dark frame)

A combination of the two seems pretty close, but there are still some significant differences.

With both versions of Perpetua the O's are too round (more noticeable on the "POLICE TELEPHONE" section as it is condensed), the U's are too big and rounded at the bottom (there's a distinct lightness to the curve on the left of the original), the C's aren't heavy enough on the bottom point, and as with the Hudolin's door there is a distinct downward swash to the lower bow of the P's on the original that I just haven't seen on any of the candidate fonts (it's really pretty rare on modern typefaces). This is just the obvious stuff, haven't done a more rigorous comparison.

pretty sure that the Pilot and Weathered version signs are the same. The differences that appear to be there are most likely due to media, focus and angle issues (and the distortions resulting from rectification). Though I am suspecting more and more that the original was hand painted (changing my previous stance that it was likely silk-screened or printed). Have to dig up my publicity stills to get high enough resolution to confirm this, but the more I look at it the more I seem to see some small variability in the size, shape and stance of the letters that wouldn't be present if printed, even by screen (though it remains quite possible this is a video artifact with the source material I've been looking at here).

They both look great, but I thought just the opposite about the font; to me the Titling looks more like the Series version whereas the regular Perpetua looks more like the Pilot version.

(But like the images of those episodes all those years ago, my eyes don't have the resolution they once had - trifocals not withstanding.)

as i have been working on my Yardley box..

I hope these might be of some use, using the reference pics, I have created PDF for each of the Yardley boxes.

I hope they are accurate enough to give someone some aid..

i use them to create the door panel in 3ds max for my virtual ones.

ive tried to recreate the fonts as accurately as i can.. for the handwritten parts..

WHen printing the sign and making it, it's obvious that the new series door panels are not A4 size, so can anyone recommend any dimensions to print by?
Any help would be much appreciated, but I don't want to fill up this topic with anything irrelevant so if this needs moving please do so!

One of the things with a lot of these signs is there's absolutely no kerning of the text. For example look at A and O and T and the like and spacing between the lettering is just huge because it's the default spacing of the font. Kerning the letters tighter together individually like tucking the A closer to a T next to it and so on makes the spacing look much better.

Of course a real Police Box or indeed even some of the old prop signs probably tend to have this sort of thing going to being made by studio prop builders who might seldom actually have a sense of typography versus just pasting letters down and hoping they are all straight...

Hello, first time poster here.  I much admire the scholarship on this forum and I have learned so much, despite nearly 50 years of my own scrunity at the various boxes!

A question for the experts on the door sign on the altered Brachacki box, circa "The Seeds of Death" to early Pertwee before the sign was redone.  There appear to be two hinges on the right and, almost invisible, a very small pull handle on the left hand side, probably painted the same colour as the panel.  Does anyone have an idea of the dimensions of this handle?

Presuming you're referring to the flat phone panel (the one without the frame), I've just looked through every entry in the 1966 TARDIS Exterior Reference section, and in a few of the photos in there I could just barely make out what looks like a small handle right where you say it is, and it is very hard to see. (It also appears to have vanished sometime during the later Pertwee era when the sign's background changed from blue to black.)

Anyway, that handle is quite small, like you described, and comparing it to the regular-sized door handle I would say it's about the same size as the little handle on the Hudolin box (1996 Movie). And using lespaceplie's Hudolin diagram (http://www.lespaceplie.com/drwho/moviebox.pdf) though there is no measurement of the handle on the diagram, comparing it's length to other measurements that little handle looks to be just over two inches long.

rassilonsrod, I think in both "The Invasion" and "The Krotons" there were two silver handles, one of which was on the sign box, but when a renovation was done for the last episode of "The Seeds of Death" the set-up I've described above occurred.  The tiny handle seems to have lasted until the panel was replaced with the black background.

You're more than welcome. As for sourcing this little handle, try one of the larger home improvement stores and look at all of their cabinet, drawer, and even window handles. Some of the cabinet and drawer handles might be small enough. You could even try thrift stores and look for old jewelry or other odd boxes that might have small handles.

It's a great letter, especially since it also starts off "Gallifrey"!
