I was looking at my old photos of the Mile End Box the other day, and I noticed something about the windows I'd never seen before.  Take a look at this enlarged crop from the pic I use for my avatar:

MileEndWindows.jpg

You can plainly see the window frames are made of metal strips, rather than wood (as I'd previously assumed they were).  Now I don't know if this is peculiar to this box (and there's no way of checking now 'cos it's gone), and I've not yet found any photos of existing or past boxes that show the windows in this detail.  The Crich box probably would, but they're so white it's difficult to see.  Also, if boxes have been painted and repainted over the years the thickness of the paint might obscure the detail.
After all, the photo above was taken circa 1975, so the box wouldn't have had many coats up to then.

You can see from the shadows the way the vertical strips are bent over the horizontal ones, rather than joined to them.

Does anyone know if this is actually how all windows were made, or only this box?

Dave

PS If anyone wants to see the rest of these pix, they're on my cheap and tawdry webspace at www.spacewarp.co.uk

The Crich has the same feature so I'm presuming they were all made like this.

A number of original boxes were done this way; it's the third I can think of off the top of my head.

The Glasgow boxes also have metal strips.
I assume all real Met boxes use this method. Stronger and more durable than wood.

The overlapping metal strips seems to be the consistant method of window making on the Met boxes.

The only difference I've noticed is that the Barnet type had the steps at the base of the window (Hartnell Style) while the Crich type had a small ledge instead.
