Hi guys and Gal's, so here is a statement followed by a question.
I am making a Time Rotor. I am pretty sure that the dimensions for the central column are correct because its plinth top happens to be the same as a roundel (or at least I've been told that by someone who should know!). But I have no idea about the dimensions for the perspex case. I have been told its roughly
2.5 ft wide, by 4 ft tall there or thereabout - but that seems HUGE - does anyone know... ???
I wish to build this (or have it made) around my 80's central column and then build my console full size around that! (although I already started a door lever coz I couldn't wait!!!)
so does anyone know how wide and how tall the clear casing is or should be???
I would also urge people to show  pictures of their time rotor's if they have one. please :-[
well heres my incomplete plinth with a make shift acetate sheet around it...

Dude, your roundels and console are absolutely beautiful, amazing, thrilling..brings a tear to me eye.  I am PMing you but wanted to post here as well. You did amazing work, and your rotor makes mine look like a hack job.  Its pristine, precise, accurate as hell..its well in a word perfect.  So make one for me and send it on over ;).  Awesome job dude.

The rotor you're doing and the later (5 Doctors) version are pretty much the same, 55cm wide by 70cm tall - so I'm not sure what's been going on with the numbers you've been given.  Essentially the full rotor width is just slightly bigger than the roundel.

From Purple's notes, that would be about 21 5/8" X 27 9/16", and odd sizing of course, but not 30" X 48".

Your rotor looks fab!
I've been putting together some plans and dimensions for the various consoles - still up for suggested corrections, though I don't think they're too far off.

http://www.relative-dimensions.net/console-plans.htm

I don't have a number for the width of the rotor itself, only the cover.

Thats very kind y'all.
Thank you for the words of encouragement.
However - I'm not sure that 70cm tall is correct - that seems on the small side.
I know that the TOP of the base stand is just a bit bigger than my roundel say 20 inches in diameter. If you allow two inches for the bottom of the plinth - thats... well even more. - and if its only 70 cm tall it seems disproportionate.
I have been very lucky and found some great reference pictures and some people have shared their pictures with me, and I think I can work it out visually from there. Its bigger than you think!
Kast, BEAUTIFUL images thanks!
Crispin, what measurements do you have?
I have to dismantle it all anyway because I have sourced better plastics, and when I put it back together again I can make correction adjustments which I have spotted
thanks again for the feed back guystimerotor  ;DDSC00058-1-1-1.jpg

Well, I can only go on what I measured when I took a tape measure to it back in the early 1990s - 70cm tall, by 55cm wide.  All the rotor was missing at the time was the top clear perspex disc.

Apologies, I had got it wrong.  I just ran up stairs and pulled out the notes I took on that rotor and it's 55cm wide by 75cm tall.

It was sat between two Daleks when I measured it and there was a note stuck to it saying something like "Doctor Who:  Keep for series - it might come back!"

Hey timerotor, what diameter tubes did you go with?  Are you using color gels inside the tubes?  Oh and just an observation,  the frosted pieces between the tubes don't extend all the way to each tube, there is a gap on either side,  Also they top of the frosted piece extends a tiny bit above the top of the yellow strip, I guestimated mine at 1/4 inch as I wasn't sure how much exactly.  Just my two cents at this point its looking awesome.  Where are you sourcing your plastics from?

Cheers Mr Purple. :)
I'll look into it further.

Karst, thanks for the tips. I have noticed that. and thats one of the reasons that Im dismantling it.
I got a lot of tubes etc from Pinewood a few years ago...there was a good shop 'general stores' for prop builders supplies etc - don't know if its still there (haven't been for years).
Also I have picked up the odd bits and bobs from The Three Mills Film Studio  - where I used to work, there are always interesting things lying around in skips etc. thats where the red gel comes from.
I have also been to The London Graphics Centre - they stock some fab plastics/perspex tubes.

I have made my own tubes out of thin but solid perspex sheets and slipped the red gel into it. I think the actual ones were 4 inches wide, but I've used the clear CD type thing you get in a bulk buy CD pack for the top and bottom - which is slightly over sized at 4 & 3/4 inches, but I think it looks more like it.
I will trim the frosted perspex and take into consideration everything you have pointed out.
Thanks again!

Oh hey not a problem,  just thought I would throw in my two cents.    Hey are you going to use a red center tube for the wires or a triangular one? I think i have seen both variations. I had wanted to do the triangle for an upgrade at some point but I can't seem to find any online that are 2" in diameter roughly  Have you seen anything like that in your acrylic searches?

Hi Karst,
no, but I am planning to find some - but then its getting the right pink - that could be difficult.
Karsten, do you know...
I have only just discovered your console and time rotor - and I am absolutely in AWE!
Its brilliant - your console looks amazing! do you have any more or updated pictures?
I hope I can save some of your build pictures for reference. please. ;D
Im hoping to make a really good and accurate time rotor - but without access to the original I will have to make do with a rough guide. Its really quite simple, when you stop looking at it as a whole thing, and manage to see HOW it is put together- and with what.  pictures on your thread have helped me  - the ones of it in BBC Visual Effects in the early 90's before its auction.
I spotted the black tape had been removed when it appeared in the TWO DOCTORS! - And thats also evident in these pictures A BIG THANKS to who ever posted them!

Hey Rotor,

Save all the pictures of mine you want for reference, it if helps you then great.  I know how it is, staring at the same photo's again and again trying to glean as much information from them as you can.  The Timerotor was my first attempt and I am pleased with the results so far, there are a few things I would do differently but for right now I am happy.   I don't have any updates currently on my console but stay tuned they are coming :).    If you track down the acrylic triangle please let me know I want to get one as well for a rotor upgrade at some point.

Hey is that yours? You need to PM me if it is, I have been wanting to source the correct lights with not much luck. I have had to use florescent lights rather then the accurate incandescent strip lights used on the original.  Wow, do you have the picture larger?
