Hi all,
I am now away from my computer until later tonight but I have read posts expressing desire to recreate props from the 60's movie TARDIS. I have folders of reference shots that I am uploading into a purpose built site of reference shots not limited to the movies however.

It always amuses me when people refer to Peter Cushing's "console room", since there isn't an actual console in there.  It's interesting though that the Police Box doors visible from the inside made a comeback in 2005.  The doors from the classic series always bugged me because I could never figure out what it actually looked like when you walked through a big zigzag thing and came out through a small wooden thing.  Funnily enough the Dalek movies were a great influence on the artwork in the early annuals, because they sometimes did have the back of the doors on the inside of the TARDIS, even though the TV series never did.

Haha yes, the console room without a console! There is quite a difference between TARDIS's from both movies too, the first is less "user-friendly" than the 2150 room. I love the 60's scientist feel of the 2150 room which I think the modern interiors lack. There's something special about bubbling pyrex beakers and bunsen burners!

Ha, I thought I had uploaded the reference grabs I made of these, seems I only did the movie TARDISes.

However, what I HAD planned on doing was a montage to show a sort of panoramic, to get a feel for the layout of the whole thing.

I was never to keen on it to be honest, and I get a huge vibe of the 2150 interior in the newest console room, even though there are bits that I do like. If there is a movie that I would like to see remade in this age of "lets remake everything" it would be a good version of the Daleks based on the original tv versions, not the doddery old professor who forgets everything.

But hey ho

Oh and TECHNICALLY it IS a console room.... there's just lots of odd looking consoles - so its actually the epitome of console rooms

Looks like they really tidied the place up a bit for the second movie. And changed the doors' interior color from blue to white.

Yeah the first console room was chaotic, they tidied it up into a "science lab" feel for 2150AD. I like the 2150AD console room its 'homely'

It took me a minute (ok... maybe a bit longer than that) to realize that "homely" in the UK means something pleasantly comfortable and cozy; in the US it's "homey". Over here, homely refers to something rather repulsive (or was that your intention?).

I thought the cushing 1st console room was crap just a load of old bits and pieces they slung together because Milton Subotsky spent all the money on the Daleks and their city,the second one was not much better ,although we do see a very young Wilf Mott in that film ( he never mentions that to DT in the show) I saw that film as a kid and was very dissappointed with the Tardis interior .

The Cushing room is indicative of "big budget" scifi of that era, though maybe 10 years behind the times that look is what I'd expect to see from a 50s/60s jaunt around space. The BBC was quite innovative in my opinion with the Hartnell room, it went a little beyond the genre conventions of the time and developed something iconic,


I'll always love this room, it's so unashamedly 60s!

Because he is not playing Wilf Mott and the movies are not cannon but something else entirely with a Human inventor called The Doctor, so why would he mention it when it never happened for "Wilf Mott"

Yes this is true (sorry I should've responded in my last post).

Bernard Cribbins was also considered for the fourth Doctor role!

I love these screen grabs.  


To tell the truth I think it would be really interesting visually if we could see a lot of these same machines in an actual console room with maybe a Hartnell style console tucked in the middle of it all.   I may try my hand at it in Sketch-Up after I finish with my current project.   If nothing else it will satisfy my curiousity as to what that might look like.

That first film - how difficult was it to understand the Dalek voices?! I appreciate it was probably pushing the limits of technology back then and the Dalek voices were much improved on the second film.
It's interesting to note that due to the current retro-fashion, some of the props (certainly in the second film) have actually come full circle and "become modern" again like the 1950's radio - could've easily been a modern DAB radio designed to look retro. Same with the Austin Cambridge car on it's side - could just be a retro-looking modern car.

Overall it's nice to see a whole different era of Doctor Who that I'd never seen before. As different as it is to the current TV series, even my 3 year old liked it and clearly identified who the Doctor was in this film.

Yes they were on Watch, Monday and Tuesday! I caught mondays before work, that spurred me on to get these pics up!

Tardis is again very much the magic wardrobe in the second Dalek movie. However, thanks to a plot twist putting the ship itself in peril and stranding Doctor Who and his companions in the 22nd Century, we get some pretty decent shots of the old girl.

1. As Tom is running towards what he thinks is an ordinary Police Box, we get some nice detail on the window frames and sign-box.  There are steps above the door, indicating that apart from the simplified window frame this is a pretty faithful copy of a Met Box of the time:

4. Nice close-up but sadly out of focus:



5. The Phone Sign panel is interesting.  The sign surround frame is definitely raised here (you can see it in other shots) and stands probably a quarter-inch proud of the door.  Nice positioning on the handles and yale lock too:



6.  Isn't she lovely? Nice and fat!



7. I like my coffee like my Tardises...covered in rubble!



8. Jill Curzon hurries past Tardis, but not too quickly to prevent us getting another good close-up.  You know, I think the windows look wider because the inner edge (nearest the centre divider) is in line with the panel below it, but I think the outer edge is slightly further over.  Anyone agree?



9.  A pretty rare shot for a Tardis - from above - highlighting the lamp housing and roof stacks beautifully.



10. Back on Earth, Tom steps down out of the Police Box, giving us a reasonable reference from his height, but also showing the depth of the base pretty well:



11.  Bye Bye Tardis.  A very good detail of the Phone Sign.  It looks to me that not only is the phone panel frame raised, but there's a raised frame around it too:
