I saw this on the news today:

Police Box Brought Back to Life

Good to see they've put it back to good use. I used to pass this every day when I used to live up in Yorkshire.

Top marks to the BBC for covering the story, but a big fat 'F' for not failing to badly superimpose the presenter over a jpeg of the Tardis console room and (of course..) there's the obligatory 'dematerialisation joke' at the end.  ::) Well done.

;)

Good on the PCSO but jesus, how badly done was that item?

SUCH CHEESE!
In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

Really, you couldn't have expected anything less - with Dr Who so popular, you couldn't run an item on the refurbishment of a police box without the Who references. It supposed to 'spice up' a story that they assume viewers will have little interest in. Make it funny, give it an angle'. I'm just stoked the old girl is getting a new lease of life and therefore extending it's life. Wish they hadn't just boarded the front windows - would be better if they gave them a face lift too - it's not like Almondbury is moss side!

True, but it really does make me cringe :P

Yeh, that was my point as well - let's have some history of police boxes and some Doctor Who references that (shock horror..!) actually shows more clips from the series instead of the tired old "ooh, look the presenters inside the Tardis" and "hey! Let's make the Almondbury police box dematerialise - no one's ever done that in a news item before.."

I mean, really.
;) :P

:D It's like when ever local news do an article on a UFO sighting - they absolutely have to play the Carpenter's 'Calling Occupants' over it and then at the end of the article a super'd flying saucer is placed flying through the sky behind the reporter at the scene.

ROFL! It's so true! Also, in UFO stories, the smug reporter always does a tongue-in-cheek rhetorical question at the end, like "So, do aliens really exist?" (then pause for a silent "Do they bo****ks") followed by "We'll just have to keep watching the skies". Then 'Calling Occupants' or even worse,  The X-files theme. Argh!!!  ::)  :D

LOL!
Karen Carpenter - what a voice! I hate it when great songs are ruined by hack reporters and news editors (not to mention adverts - anyone for a Cornetto? Just one. Give it to meeeee. Argh.)

Um, have we just gone off-topic, an itty bitty bit? Sorry, my fault  :P

My favourite bit of the video (just to bring us back on topic) was the bearded chap at the beginning of the vid who shuffled past muttering "Docter Ooo"

I nearly spilt my tea on my keyboard!

It is good that some of the old boxes are being put back to use. I know the ones in Scotland have been in use as coffee shops for years, but actually being used for there original purpose is something else.

The Sheffield one which is not that dissimilar to this box was in use with the Police up until recently but know it has been taken over by a council run group called The City Center Ambassadors who are like PCSO's but with even less powers.

Have to agree about the bad chromokey of the presenter. I've seen home made ones done better!

Side note - this is the newly-restored box in my (and Jodie Whitaker's) home town of Huddersfield ... if nothing else, at least they didn't take inspiration from it! :D
