There are two parts to this: The column is counter-weighted so it can move up
and down freely, and there is a crank box which pushes it up and down like a
piston. It needs some adjustment at the moment, as it's not working well.

found it best to built the substructure with some basic dimensions and then
cut the smaller parts to fit.

Wander in the 3rd Dimension
You cannot see attachments on this board.
Here's a stereo pair of the console. To see this, maximize your browser, sit
a little back, put your finger pointing upward about 8" from your nose so
that when you look at the picture you see two ghosts of your finger both
pointing at the base of the console in each picture. Now look at your finger.
Now turn your attention to the console, and it should snap into focus in
glorious 3D. Don't do this for long as it may give you eye-strain.
