Amazing build you've got here! ;D
I had a question about the panels. How thick were the boards you used to make the panels out of? I'm making plans to build a Capaldi myself and I'm having trouble finding the right depth for the panels.

Hey Bren? So I saw your lantern way back in the diary; and was wondering, how long were those struts on your lantern? (Also I've never typed in Tardis builders before so sorry if this pops up in a weird place. :( )

Thank you! That will definitely help! And do you by chance know what this lamp specifically is called?Screenshot_20230708-124925.png

So quick answer is no because I don't know the original manufacturer of the lamp, neither the model code. But there is a few links to market places that sold it on the internet. I haven't traced the og manufacturer yet, no time so far.
Here is a link to one of the last place I found it, named Massive new heaven, with a couple images in bonus.

Good luck if you try to trace one, and if you do create a channel to track done your progress;)

This is a problem reproduction prop builders everywhere have.  Back when the Smith TARDIS was built, the builders picked out a relatively easily sourced lamp to use in their build.  Since then the lamp has gone out of production--which makes it not only harder to get, but harder to even come up with the name and model to aid in searching for a used one.  IIRC, the Mr. Fusion garbage reactor Dr. Brown adds to the DeLorean at the end of "Back to the Future" is a lightly modified electric coffee grinder that was fairly easy to find--in the 1980s.  Now if you wanted to build a "Back to the Future" DeLorean, you might as well just resign yourself to building the element from scratch.  Same with my A-Team van.  I've been lucky and able to track down most of the stuff I needed for an accurate build--although I did that 5 years ago and a lot of my sources have since gone away--but I've never found the right lights or brush guard.  I had to settle for lights that are a little too small (the first ones I had that were too large were WAAAY too large) and I had to build a brush guard from scratch.  You could get that stuff in quite a few places in the 1980s.  In 2023 it is impossible to get.  So you wind up just having to build stuff from scratch from component parts.

Alright well thanks for that anyway I didn't know they were that hard to find.

The TARDIS lanterns are mostly made out of modified laterns that exist in the commerce. Some being more or less common. The prious model's body was both very rare and expensive and it happened because the build was outsourced of the BBC Wales workshop. This one is made both of a cheap candle lantern for the top part that was manufactured in China over 20years and that wall mounted front door lantern.

Over the years, I see a few clues that tells me it has been serviced using gutter piping and a resin reproduction of both the top cover and the fresnl lense.
Diameters matchs, if you want to try to reproduce it I would advice you to try the plastic piping instead of sourcing the original lamp. I can give you a few sources.

Hi all.

Just wondering if it's worth splitting the last few posts off from this topic & relocating them to the "TARDIS lamp" section?
Saves hijacking poor Bren's TARDIS thread..?

That's an excellent point.  It would be nice to leave the original question in it in case Bren pops in and has an answer.  Hopefully someone else with authority will tackle it.  If not, I'll try to figure it out tomorrow.

Time of the boxes next refit!, I'm getting her ready for a tv spot in november so gotta be looking in tip top shape,

first thing was i took all the windows out to get new black film put on
Also removed the top signs as they were looking a bit rough around the edges so got some new ones of them printed up.

Another change that I've been wanting to make for ages is to replace the pull to open sign as the old one was just a vinyl sticker on the panel rather than raised letters.
So I went about designing it up, i considered getting them laser cut from acrylic, but in the end I ended up 3d printing all the letters on my resin printer and i have to say its looking so much nicer.

the letters look like this when they come off the printer, so reorganising them and placing them was a bit of a task.

and this is the old sign next to it

then I hung it on the door.

Snapchat-1257430412.jpg
while I was there I also got the new top signs back in.
20231031_114335.jpg
when I first attached the windows, they were just held in place by a good amount of silicone which was a pain to remove from the wood, so this time I 3d printed some little mounts which clamp the window in place, so they can be more easily removed now if I need to.
I only printed the one so far to test it, but it seems to work well

So far so good!, she's already looking a lot nicer, given some bits a good clean up as well and I cant wait for november!

Nice! I like the idea of 3D printing the sign letters!
