Lost me with it too, I'm afraid. All I could think of was Norman Wisdom shouting" Mr Grimsdale!!". Oh well, at least I got one name right 😂

Also, it did bring to mind that comic strip from one of the 90s "yearbooks" where Tom leans out of the TARDIS and asks, quizically: "Brighton Pavillion...?"
😁

Quote from: redfern on Sep 13, 2021, 08:07 pmReally?!  It couldn't be any more quintessentially British.

It's the "Spiny Norman" sequence animated by Terry Gilliam for "Monty Python".  "Spiny Norman" is a kaiju sized hedgehog that keeps peering over and around buildings calling for "Dinsdale" (I misspelled it in my previous post), the more overly paranoid of the infamous Piranha Brothers.

I would provide a video clip, but all I find are recreations of the bit, not the authentic footage...strange.

In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

RR: I thought it was some kind of "Where's Wally?" thing (Is it "Where's Waldo?" in the States?)

Francis: Great pic.
I need to learn how to do more clever technical stuff with my photos...  :-\

Cheers!

Morning!

One scene I liked was the Bobby using the TARDIS prop as a real Police Box:

I appreciate this scene even more now.
I used to only be interested in TARDISes, but after joining TB, I have developed a deep & genuine interest in real historical police boxes.

The scene in "Logopolis" reminds me of these photos, which I think are two of the best pics on TB:

16.jpg

17.jpg

For a while now I have been thinking that I'd like to use my Police Box to recreate some of those vintage "Bobby making a phone call" pictures.

With this scene, I can kill two birds with one stone!

So I cobbled together a policeman's uniform & took some photos.

To find out how I did it & see the results, wait for the next post....

That's all for now, guys....

See you soon!

Regards,

Russell

Ha! Got me!

Soooo.... Couldn't wait to show you my latest set of pics, so here we go!

I got pretty much the whole costume from charity shops.

Black shoes, trousers & tie.
White shirt.
My best buy was the black jacket for only £5. I like the three button look, as I think it looks more vintage. The one or two button look is a bit too modern for me.
I covered the buttons in tin foil to make them look silver & made the shoulder patches from card.

You can get genuine vintage coppers helmets from vintage shops, but the ones I found were all £40 plus, which is a bit rich for a one-off photo session,so I bought a plastic fancy dress one from a joke shop, for about £4.
Not as good as the real thing, obviously, but when married to the rest of the costume, it's surprisingly convincing.

So, here is my hybrid Logopolis/vintage bobby cosplay photoshoot:

"Tonight, Matthew, I'm going to be...The Police!"
18.jpg

"What's my address? 999 Letsby Avenue..."
19.jpg

"What would I like for tea?  Irish stew (in the name of the law...)"
20.jpg

"Anything you say will be taken down..."
"knickers!"
22.jpg

"Our Police station toilets have all been stolen...
Currently we have nothing to go on..."
23.jpg

"A truckload of Viagra has been stolen...
I'm looking for a bunch of hardened criminals..."
25.jpg

"You found a dead ice-cream man, covered in hundreds & thousands?
Sounds like somebody topped him..."
26.jpg

"Your turkey is missing, Sir?
Do you suspect fowl play?"
29.jpg

"You stole a torch, Sir?
Well, You'll probably get a light sentence!"
34.jpg

Well, I hope that little lot raised a smile.
I think I might get arrested for crimes against comedy....  ;D

Thanks for looking in.

Evening all!!!

Russ, in uniform you remind me (uncannily) of an old pen-pal of mine in the Police, whose name was, genuinely, David Lister!
A mixed-up non-conformist, trying to fit in.

When I'm not wildly off-topic, I'm terribly critical.  But I know you're up for it.  The Bobby uniform is maybe a bit like a Stargate uniform--you think it'll be relatively simple, but when you actually try to execute it, you realize how hard it is.  I think you made a wise choice in buying the costume hat.  Because the uniform is so distinctive that an authentic hat with a dark suit, I think, would've just made the suit look worse.

The bobby uniform has a very military cut to it.  The top for my dress blues would've suited you better (although it has the Mandarin collar of the one file photo instead of lapels and a tie with a collared shirt).

You have a jacket that is aggressively tailored.  It has a belt--higher up than the belt for trousers would be.  My uniform, the belt is just below the ribcage.  You've got not 3 but 4 buttons on the jacket.  You've also got 2 bottom pockets with buttons and 2 breast pockets with buttons.  Very tough look to pull off--especially for a throwaway character.  I think you answered the mail quite nicely.  It's such an iconic shot you had to have it, but not one to blow the budget on.  After all, you've got an Australian stewardess and Trakken princess outfits to spring on us.  Or am I revealing spoilers?

Actually, now that I think about it, you pretty much have to do Anthony Ainley as the regenerated Master.  And that should be pretty awesome.

Thanks for the input, Volpone.
You are right, of course. At first glance, the bobby costume doesn't look too bad, but it certainly doesn't stand up to close scrutiny.
There is the criminal offence of "impersonating a Police Officer", so I could always say I deliberately made my costume a bit "off" to avoid being arrested for that crime!!

Overall, I think I got the "feel" of it, so for a "one-off", I'm happy enough.  :)

Regarding the rest of "Logopolis", I must reveal that I'm not attempting a Nyssa or a Tegan.
(Sorry to disappoint, folks!)

I just feel they are more identified as the 5th Doctors companions, rather than Tom's, so they don't get me excited enough to give them a go.

Regarding the Master... I'm in two minds... I'd like to give Anthony's version a go, & at first you'd think it's a fairly easy costume to replicate.
But on closer inspection, you can see it's actually really tricky.

If it was Anthony from "Planet of Fire", it would be easy, just a plain black suit & tie- simples!

But the "Logopolis" get up has tails, ruffles, all kinds of flourishes that make it really tricky to pull off....

So we'll see...

Thanks for your interest,

Russell

I found a couple of reference pics that illustrate what I mean about the Master.

This one shows how ornate his collar is:

m2.jpg

And this one shows how long the tails on his jacket are, plus how puffed the shoulders are:

m3.jpg

To be frank, I'm not sure how I'd go about doing this one, bar gluing or stitching extra bits onto a plain black suit..  :-\

(Do you get the feeling I'm trying to talk myself out of this one....?   :P  )

Cheers!

Hi Russell,

I reckon you should talk yourself into this one!
Always liked Anthony Ainleys Master and this is a proper villains outfit!
(Ok I give in the puffed up shoulders give it a slight dash of panto but I love it!)

redfern

Ainley's Logopolis ensemble has proved an issue for Character Options, too.  During height of toy production during the Tennant years, CO likely had the resources to finance a whole new figure, but when they finally opted to make one, they only had the funds to produce a head and thus fitted it upon a "suited" body, marketing it as a "Planet of Fire" version.  The complexity kinda' parallels your situation.

Sincerely,

Bill

Volpone

Too bad he doesn't have Delgado's simpler Nehru jacket (although even that could be a challenge to find at a reasonable price).  But yes, I absolutely agree that, like so many of the JNT era costumes, Ainley's standard Master outfit is not something one can just throw together from a thrift shop.  You'd almost have to make it from scratch.
