Quote from: Volpone on Apr 17, 2021, 03:36 pmAs a kid, I built plastic model airplane kits and I'd like to have a go at a model wooden sailing ship from a kit, but these scratch-built models always blow my mind.  To some degree, a TARDIS is a relatively simple shape, but you don't have to get the dimensions off by much before it looks wrong.  I would never have the precision, patience, and attention to detail to do one of these models.  Ironically, there's a bit more "fudge factor" on a full-sized build.  If something's off by 1/4", it is a lot harder to notice than if something's off by 1/16" on a model.  And it is easier to disguise measurement errors on a full sized build.  (IMO).  My build is far from perfect, but it looks pretty darned good--if I say so myself--and there aren't 2 panels or window panes on it that are the same size.  Much harder to get away with that on a model (or even harder if, for example, you're doing the altered Barachaki and you NEED to have things not square--in very specific ways.

I'd still encourage you to give it à shot if you d'like one. Mines are fairly cheap concidering the fact that i try to source most of my matérials out of binned cajettes and stuff. I'm more and more desapointed of my first tardis but still,as a kid, if i had it, i would have gone nuts over it. The fact is i traced and bought à CO tardis with figurines for a friends birth day... And i still have it...

To day i'm posting here because i've learn éd most of what i know on thoses on this forum and i hope i can give something back by sharing the procès of making my models(how ever dangerous and stupide i'm making it for my self).

As for your current build, i love it. And wired enought i like some of the stages it went trought more thand other... 'don' t know if it makes sens

All posts can be fited now. I'm moving on the sign boxes and finishing carving the grooves and details on the posts. Also i'm hoping i'll finish all of this to night. I'll probably move on th the roof after that and finish with the side pannels and door fittings

Slow progress on the D prop model.
I've pushed the basse as far as i could despite missing the 2mm wood. I'll need it for the bottom hereIMG_20210420_013921_734.jpg and the topIMG_20210420_013923_121.jpg.
The bevel is doneIMG_20210420_013920_742.jpg
And all corner posts fits IMG_20210420_013926_339.jpg

I've started working on the roof and made à 2nd sign box. The roof is about half way done i think. IMG_20210420_013924_805.jpgIMG_20210420_013918_821.jpg

It fits on top of the posts, to it's not really the tightest of them. I'll have to find à way to make the prop more solide when assembled. Batteries shall still be mounted in it like my other props, i might make some sorts of plus or connectors to light up the sign boxes and all.

That's it for now. I've manage to trace the paint back and found à source that's not to expensive, i'm procrastination on to ordering it.

Keep it up!

I guess i'll have to repaint it...
Speaking of paint i might try tho go for a matching hue with finer métal sparkles for it to look proper sized instead of the real subaru paint

What do you think ?
Shall i order the real deal any way ? IMG_20210421_163821_185.jpg

alextheyellowthing

So here is à personnal mix i've tried to match with what i believe thé paint looks like but finer sparkles

I really can't décide.
I think i'll order it and then test and see for my self. I've à feeling i know what will happen but i can ask for advices here anyway and get perspectives
Besides, i'm looking to go for as much close to the réal deal i can get

hey man, thx^^

any thoughts on the paint situation?

russellsuthern

Sorry,

I don't really know enough about the different shades to make any meaningful contribution.

I tend to just eyeball it & hope for the best...  ::)

I'm sure whatever you decide to do, it'll turn out looking great.  :)

Différentes white balance tests

It's to late to use power tools right now, but roof progress shall résumé tomorow with the making of the lamp. IMG_20210422_032205_847.jpgIMG_20210422_032213_024.jpg

That's some heavy thinking.  I see your point but don't know enough about the Subaru paint to know what the metallic looks like--and don't know how one would accomplish a finer sparkle if it was decided that was the way to go.  But this does remind me of a Science Museum exhibit on special effects I went to ages ago.  There was a 1994 Ahnuld/James Cameron action/adventure film called "True Lies," where a bridge gets blown up.  They did it with a model.  But because you can't make model explosives and the (full sized) expansion rate of the explosion would've ruined the effect of the model (at a subconscious level, because none of us knows the expansion rate of the explosion involved in air to ground missiles) they slowed down (or sped up, I forget, but I think it was slowed down) the film (because in Olden Dayes, they shot talking pictures on film) so the speed of the explosion matched the scale of the model.

i've sold my problem i think,i've miced a paint that looks quite nice (more on that in a few minutes) aboutthe explosion and miniature effec,i fell in love with that because of thunderbirbs, and i can tell ya that foutage was most likly slowed down because to simulate a diffrent scale of air dancity and "gravity" i guess. it slows down stuff and makes small stuff looks more real. i'll try and find an exemple

So, quite à lot as happened today.
The roof is finished. And i really mean finished. I've mixed up à paint and tried it on, i'm really happy with it and will eventualy move on with it in the future (only down size is my pigment ratio that is à bit to fin,but the métal specs fine grinded i puted in made it worth it) it's basic acryliques with à mat varnish on top sprayed very wet so it doesn't look too dole.
IMG_20210423_010515_329.jpgIMG_20210423_010517_398.jpgIMG_20210423_010511_429.jpgIMG_20210423_010529_246.jpg

Batterie compartiment fits in nicely, same système as usual for the lights. I'll tackle that part later in the build.
IMG_20210423_010508_819.jpg

I'm very plesantly surprise by how the lamp turned out, i strugled quite à lot to source the matérial that would suit nicely. In the end, i've made the fresnel à long time ago with some glue stick, the lamp body with some spare pièces from curtains mount's bars ends, and the cap, like my original A/B lamp, was made some time ago using an american dîme and some fimo.

IMG_20210423_010527_326.jpgIMG_20210423_010525_537.jpgIMG_20210423_010510_208.jpg

I'm over all pretty please and i'm egare to bring it around for photo shoot. I think i'll eventualy finish the sign boxes on this and then go back on my new A/B prop to also make the roof on it.
