'Ello lads. Tom again. In between putting the finishing touches on the TARDIS and buying parts for a Cybergun, I've been fine-tuning the dims for a 5 Docs console. One thing confuses me...

Is the top half of the top section completely symmetrical to the bottom half? Put another way, do the six bottom most panels angle down at the same angle that the six top most rise? The DWM "plans" show that the angle is the same but many other sources and pics seem to say otherwise. However one would have to have taken the photograph (like this one) at exactly the height of the edge of the top section to see this properly.

Any thoughts are appreciated, Cheers Tom

A couple of new queries about the Five Docs console that others besides Purple may be able to answer...

1) Is that five-sided pyramid thingy on the monitor panel an available part, or would I have to make it from scratch? I believe it was called the "Gallifreyan Recall Device" in one story, but I can't remember which

2) The 13-hex rim piece that hides the join between the upper and underside panels... was that molded GRP or is that also a commercially available part?

Thanks all
T

How's tricks Tom?

I have to say that this console is my favorite, although as far as dims go, I can't help.

I can't remember who, but one of the members of this board has the original prop, or at least some top panels. I'm sure that person will be able to help.

(Apologise for crap memory by the way)

UPDATE - Just checked back on previous posts, it's PurpleBlamange that has the console.

Purple has parts of the original "rehearsal" console which was never fully rigged out with switches etc and has an interesting life since.  I think that his gear will be all packed away at the moment though he could probalby give some dims off the top of his head if he were here.  However, if you hunt back through the TR1 site you may well find a few threads on consoles dimensions and I remember Purplue posting a diagram there giving the major figures for the 5 Docs version.

Cheers, glen

Thanks for the tips lads.  ;)

Let's say an aspiring renegade Time Lord/stay-at-home father experiencing a Who-related midlife crisis wanted to learn about fiberglass casting and produce 12 reproduction console panels (3 w/ monitor, 3 w/0, and 6 bottom panels). Oh yeah, 6 plinth panels too!  :P

Would plywood make an acceptable former for each, or do you need to use another material? Your mold would then be... fiberglass? Then cast the actual panels in fiberglass? ???

(Kindly pardon the extreme ignorance... but I'm trying!!!)  ;D

Cheers Tom

As Glen says, my console parts are all boxed up and are in storage, though I'll try to get access to them soon for a bit of a measuring session... but I must say that despite its looks, it's quite a complex prop to make.

To make the former, the only material that I'd recommend is MDF or one of the derivatives of this as you need to have no grain in the surface whatsoever.  From this you'd then take your GRP and make the mould from this for you to cast with.  Again, I'll try to get some pictures later to show what I mean about the complex design of this prop.  For now, I'll just head over to your other post and answer some questions there.

See ya in a mo!

Hi guys, I tried writing Lungman but didn't get a reply so I thought I'd post here.  Anyone got any suggestions for the materials, angle, etc for the door handle?  How thick of a tube? What is the curve?  Red handle suggestions?  Appreciate any info.  Thanks!

Well Lungman does make an appearance from time to time but not very often. He is quite busy. But I'm sure he will answer his mail sooner or later.

while I don't know the exact dimensions of the metal tube Jarred used here are the reference images from his build if someone wants to hazard a guess.

The black disc next to the door handle is a hockey puck!  :)

the "hockey puck" looks like it is an air hockey puck
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

I'm thinking that the slot for the handle is about 3.25" by 6.5". Anyone think that's right/wrong?  Not sure about the height but it'd be at a 20 degree angle like the panel.

The middle panel with all the keys came up to 14.25" when I figured it up. I just am not sure about that back top row.

I thought I'd post the first few measurements I'm reasonably sure of:
doctorwho457copy.jpg
All units are centimetres although I think the square dimple buttons may actually be 3/4" anyway all very approximate but it's a start.

Having a Look around the net I did find some measurements by Rassilon's Rod for the Five Doctors Console
NoScreenSizes_Frame.jpg
NoScreenSizes.jpg
NoScreenSizesRim.jpg

now if only he had the measurements for the Panel with the monitor ...
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.

Those pictures are great but I'm confused about the top of the panel.  Those show 16" across the top but purpleblancmange posted earlier in this thread that the real one is 17.25".  If the top is 17.25" then can the slot below be 17.5" across accounting for the angle of the panel?

Rassilons Rod

It could be a typo on my part... Purple has the originals... Only he would know.

However, it is the case that the measurements get larger as you go down, of course.

As for the other plans that I have made... I can offer this at the moment. I have a PSD that I can't
open at the moment because I don't currently have photoshop installed... I can't even guarantee
that I have measurements for the holes in there... I'll see what I can do about that when I have
Photoshop installed.

Good start .... I was looking at 8" screens now I find I may have to rethink the size of the monitors.

I believe the monitors were 10". They used to still have them 7 years ago when I left the BBC.

Don't forget that this plan does not account for the hood that goes over the monitor.
