Although, can I say, I don't like the new design- (If sumthin' aint broke- don't fix it!!!)

Still, will be good to have some new Who on the telly box...

I don't mind it. Not my favourite, but it's alright.

Still a better design than the paradigm iDaleks.

And the paradigm Daleks were crap.

Daleks have an odd design in that they look amazing when you get all the proportions exactly right. But slightly off and they look awful. Hundreds of toys and comic strips will testify to that.

Not sure at the moment, I think I need to see more of them.
The 'tweaked' Paradigm design was a lot better, simply by toning down the colours and the hunch-back, but by then the public opinion was set. These ones might prove to be popular. One thing I don't understand is the plethora of people on the social medias touting the Bronze Daleks as somehow sacrosanct, and how dare they change them - as if the Daleks weren't changed every time they appeared in classic Who! The fact that they never so much as varied the colours (except for Sec) makes the Bronze design an outlier.

I like them.  They remind me a bit of this chap. Dark, sinister, and dangerous.

For what it's worth, my opinion:

Yes, they did change the design of the Daleks in original Who, but the thing they didn't tamper with was the iconic shape,the outline.
Seen in silhouette, they looked virtually the same.

That was the positive of the bronze Daleks. They were blinged up, but the overall design was based on the original shape- so the silhouette was the same.

As Jam Jar says.. It's such a tricky shape. Get it just right & it looks amazing, but get it wrong at your peril!

I'm sure this is why the New Paradigm failed. It wasn't just the size or bright colours, but the basic shape was all wrong. It just didn't sit easy on the eye.
And I think this is why these new ones will be an interesting deviation, but will soon be exterminated into oblivion, in favour of the classic design!!!

Russell just hit the nail on the head!

When RTD ordered the Bronze Daleks, he had only two rules:
1) that the shilouette remain completely unaltered
2) that the Daleks be gold

It is, absolutely, 100% about that shilouette. It's the same as the TARDIS. The shape can change all it wants, but as long as the shilouette is there we subconsciously overcome that first hurdle and accept it. In my opinion, it's why many people have so much trouble with the Newbery - when seen from afar the differences register more than the similarities.

Same with this new design. The skirt is an odd shape, it has huge gaps between each section, the dome is too tall, etc. All minor things that immediately separate it from what we would expect of a Dalek, to say little of whether any of us actually 'like' the new design or not. In fact, I'd say this is an even greater departure than the New Paradigm Tellytubbies.

But it's not all about the shilouette, either. When the rusty Recon Dalek appeared last Christmas, I'd argue that it was even further away from the classic design than this. It was wearing a corset, it didn't have enough balls to take on the Doctor (hehehehehehe), etc. But in that case, it was the way that it was used that saved it. They made it scary again through other means, so it's still quite liked.

So what I'm saying is... nothing. I'm just rambling.

But, is this really the new Dalek design? I think the jury's still out on that. The Recon Dalek was just that, a Recon Dalek. It had an intentionally different casing. Could this be a Recon Dalek (or even the SAME Recon Dalek) back in its original home? The design is clearly influenced by the Dalek Storm Special Weapons Dalek, after all, and that Dalek was never meant to replace the Imperial look.

For my money, the new paradigm daleks had some fantastic details. But the overall plastic look and (as you rightly say) the silhouette just didn't do it for me.

This new one.... looks just too fragile and petite.

I can fully agree there. One thing I always thought about the New Paradigm was that, if you were ever lucky enough to meet one in person, all of a sudden, they 'made sense'. Their ridiculous size was suddenly imposing, their eyes were creepy, their edges were sharp and dangerous. On screen, that's when they started to look like marshmallows.

It might also be fair to say that this initial reaction never gave them a fair crack at the whip - we never saw their best details! Ideas like the shoulders being designed so that new weapons could pop out the back, for example, were awesome! We just never got that far...

Yeah but the silhouette... Too hunchback.

And the promotion material was garbage. Something about always wanting the doctor to see eye to eye with them?

They were always meant to be squat so that it didn't look like they were able to house a standard height human.

I have to say, I saw some of The New Paradigm at "The Gathering" & they do look better in real life than on-screen...
But you are right about that hunchback "shudder..."
That really was an error.

I guess part of my beef with any redesign in any franchise is that I'm always wondering if there's some exec in the background pushing for it: "We need something new for those merchandise sales, guys! Get designing!!"
