I thought I would add some more to update the building diary of my console.
I needed to make it full size, but rather than the original structure of two halves, I needed it to be modular - so each panel was a separate box - similar to Other Dave's build. Although I was building it at my dad's house - the console was going to live in my maisonette which would make two halves for the top impractical.
I started this part of the build a whole year later from making the plinth,  in August 2018.


As you can see, the top is made of separate boxes.



Just having a look t it off the ground - I just had to see it like this!



Trying out a template for the collar.
This was actually really hard to make.



Having made the collar - but not gluing it yet - it's held by tape - I started on the panels!

Now the top is pretty much done - next to build was the tricky central column - I'll post all about that soon!

Literally everything from Dr. Who is like..."...Wow.  That's a lot bigger than I thought it would be." 

I was sooo tempted to post a crude joke it this point, but you will all be relieved to see I have resisted the temptation!  (Makes a change!)

But Volpone is so right.
When I started with my Dalek, then my TARDIS, then K-9... every time I'd start my build, then I'd stand back & survey my work & think, "Blimey!!  That's a lot bigger than I thought it would be..."

Will I ever learn?

Anyway, have to pop off now & start my full sized Kroll build....

looks awesome, already a better build than mine I would say, your tolerances are a lot tighter on the panels, I had to fudge a bit on some .

Well, knowing 20th century BBC props, you can probably say yours is more *authentic* then.

I thought it was time for an update.
The next stage was building the Time Rotor.
Thanks to Tony and Karsten, I was able to gain the knowledge to build it.
Some stages were a bit tricky - but it all came together.






After sourcing some correct size perspex tubes I started on the central triangular pier. This was quite tricky to make using a table saw!




At this stage, I went straight to building the outer casing for the Time Rotor.
This was really tricky - and I had no idea if the materials I bought would work - but phew, it ended up looking pretty good!







Next, using Tony's idea for the light sockets, I built the light fittings and tried different shades of red lighting sheets.






Now it was a case of carrying on building and cutting the other perspex parts and assembling it all, and wiring up the flashing bulbs onto the central pier.





Then I put it all together on the central mechanism I was putting together (which ended up being completely rebuilt - but more on that later).

I may have missed it in the diary entry, but could you give a bit more specific info on what material you used for the clear outer tube of the time rotor?

(I can see it came from Wickes!)

And, if it's not too rude a question, was it very expensive?

I used Wickes Durable Clear Acrylic Sheet - 900mm X 1800mm x 2mm

It's £30 a sheet.
I had to feed it through a table saw with a suitable blade to get it the correct width and length. This was tricky as it's such a large sheet size. You have to cut it exactly the right length for the circumference of the disc. The Aluminium strip has to be lined up with any holes precisely. It took some careful measuring and quadruple checking before attempting anything!

The top disc was custom made by a plastics company for £36.

Hi all, I thought it was about time I updated this build. I have a few teasers for you regarding the different panels and the various controls.

I have managed to identify and source some identical parts used on the real console, or near perfect matches - however - if you've tried to build an exact version you'll appreciate that there are many bespoke parts that can't be found and need to be reproduced from scratch. I had to put all my powers of building into practice to start the controls. I worked for hundreds of hours to get the correct dimensions and detail.

I planned to make all the switches work - which is not easy as many were dummy, non-functioning switches on the original.
