okokpkokokok...GEEZE YA TRY TO BE NICE.
YES it's blue green....I thought it was neat so I shared with you ungrateful lot.
I also thought it was 360 and I called the seller just now and it's only 180.

Crispin, you may delete this whole thread if you like.

Well, it may be a 180 degrees lens, but if this is within the right size range of a TARDIS lens, if someone was clever with RTV moulding and clear resin casting, they could make a several halves of this. They could then either sell them in halves as a kit, or bond them together into a 360 and sell them that way (for slightly more I would think). The initial cost of setting up something like that might be a bit high, but I'm sure there would be enough interest from this forum that the sale of said castings could quickly pay for the set up and then some.

Just a thought (but sadly I am not one of those who's any good with making moulds or casting: tried it a few times, each with disastrous results).

Let's try this again... (I deleted the original reply because I couldn't get a pic to work right.)

I found this in a local Ace Hardware the other day:

Tardis_fresnel_possibility.jpg

I'm looking for a larger version but this likely is useful to someone even if it doesn't come in a framework.

Judging by the size on the label on the shelf I am going to assume those to be replacement "jars" for a Jam Jar light

That would likely be correct especially since the part number +Ace Hardware comes up with those type of lights via Google.

Regardless I know there are larger versions out there it was just interesting to see this one on the shelf and available.  I'm going to definitely keep looking though.  There's a local lighting place that may be able to give me custom order info.

As of 06-15-2010 1pm PST Joe tells me he has 5 or 6 in stock at $44.00
He said he can order more "if there is a need"...so that's good to hear. ;D
Please note these fresnels are not 6" true...it's more 5.5" (just like a 2x4 isn't really 2x4)

I had a wee bit of time to spare so I took a drive down to South Seattle and visited Specialty Hardware. I met Joe Hickey
and he fetched a FRESNEL for me. It is an impressive hunk of glass. It has flaws, you can see seams and a few air bubbles in the cast glass.
I asked again 'how many do you have left in stock' and he confessed he really did not know as they are 'spread around'. He promised to phone me with an accurate count, when he does I will post it.
I asked again about getting more after the last few sell. He said yes it SHOULD be possible, but the price could be significantly higher and it might require a minimun number of Fresnels be ordered at one time. He promised to check into it and find out how many a minimum order would be (5? 10?) ...again I will post the info when I get it.
I seized the opportunity to get mine at the $44 price. Here are some pix:

It is not 6" true...more like 5.5"

Cathlyn:
You met Joe Hickey!!!! Awesome....  We should post his photo in thanks!  ;) :P
He sent me my glass fresnels 4 years ago.  There are the real McCoy.
I was referred to Speciality Hardware by Karsten and Purpleblancmange, a good referral indeed.
I recall posting the photos of my fresnel and the contact info for other builders.
I really wonder how many he has left.  It might be good to keep a spare on hand.
We are waiting to see that fresnel in its proper place... :)

Cheers,
Jon

I concur he is a very nice man, and while I didn't get his picture I did guide him (they had internet) to the TBF website and showed him
"what we do" with the fresnels. I think he was impressed.

Watch the price go up!   :o :P
We better order a couple more before he realizes the gold that he has there!

I really didn't spill the beans as Joe knew we built 'police boxes' he just didn't know about DW and TARDIS' <gasp>
I don't think he will raise the prices on his remaining Fresnels, in fact he mentioned the price was the original price from way back when.
And he was upfront about a price increase in the future when he has to order new stock.
Oh and I forgot to mention the place was CRAWLING with knobs, switches, levers, buttons, boxes, and things a console builder might cherish.
