One of my best friends recently splashed out on a lathe and a mill for his garage. Whilst I'm excited to see what he'll make, he's also been kind enough to start teaching me proper use of these machines, given that he's an engineer by trade. In the past, my experience has been limited to infrequent use and dodgy practise (that is to say, I could probably have made something like this myself, but I would have achieved a much worse finish, got some dimensions wrong, and almost certainly caused wear on the tools).

This is my first attempt at making something to his standards, though admittedly not all the cuts were mine. The dimensions were taken from a CO toy, and it's all static. Quick, and a good learning piece.





I've been working on the cosmetics, including the halo, all myself, using tape and paint - though I think I'll do a complete repaint once this is all over, and use a real yellow sticker for the spiral!

The plan is, hopefully, for me to work up to a fully-functioning War Doctor when all this is over, and then maybe after that I'll be more comfortable using these machines without risking causing some horrific accident!

Nothing shines quite like actual metal, does it?

Thank you all, and believe me, I wish I had a lathe too! It took perhaps 4 hours to get this done. Been imaging all that I would have made if I was more trained up and had access to it during the lockdown.

My friend, the engineer who actually owns the thing, has been working on something very, very exciting with it, however. A prop which I've barely seen recreated by fans before. I don't want to spill the beans quite yet, mostly because they're not my beans to spill, but he was attracted to it because of how deceptively complicated it is to make - is excited his engineering brain!

Russ, if I do do more practise, and end up making a few more along the way, I'm sure you'll be getting a parcel, of course

At the risk of not saying the right thing I love how substantial this looks. In my head I always think of the classic sonic being beefier than it actually was so this looks just right to me.

I wish I had a lathe and knew how to use it but it's probably best I don't... the forum doesn't need me flooding it with my substandard aluminium creations... I've done that enough already lol!

Not at all Cardinall, you're exactly right! It is indeed chunkier than the prop, owing to the fact that all the dimensions were copied from the War Doctor Co toy that happened to be lying on a nearby counter. Its pretty spot on to the toy, I think, but yes, as a Third Doctor the innaccuracies are more obvious.

Oh well, it is might solid and heavy. If anyone breaks on I can whack 'em with it!

I've always wanted a metal working lathe. If I had one I'd be turning out screwdriver's everyday...

Yep all is metal, though the halo and bullet are a bit more hodge-podge! I had to do all of that without the lathe once Bojo cut all our mojo and I was stuck working solo (you can see there's a reason I never pursued a career as a rapper).

Oh and believe me, if I did actually own that lathe I'd be churning them out non-stop!
