Hi all!

A sunny day!

So I got to work on my head...

It was as stressful as I thought it would be! Even using super bendy 2 mill hardboard, it was just really difficult to bend & glue everything into place.
I used the same method of gluing the bits together with wood glue, then held it into place with masking tape.
There's so much tape on him, he looks like a mummy, or like he's been in a terrible accident!

The last bit round the back just wouldn't hold, so I banged in a couple of tacks. No one will notice! 










I'm going to leave it overnight to dry proper solid, then get the tape off & see where I need to trim down & where I need to add filler.

It's going to need a lot of TLC to make it presentable & good enough for painting.

But I'm pleased I've got the basic shape of the body & head sorted out.

I did a bit more on the head, then mocked up the neck to get the positioning I wanted.
Gave me the opportunity to take some "stack" shots....









Question:
What do TARDISes, Daleks & K-9's all have in common?..


Answer:
They all a lot bigger than you thought they were going to be when you start building them!!!

Looking like a very good boy already! Hope you've been stocking up on nuts and bolts for him to snack on

He's definitely growing up to be a fine dog!

I don't think you've said anywhere Russell if you're going to motorise him or whether you might simply fit castors and pull him along on his lead?



If you're going to feed him on nuts and bolts, make sure he's house-trained - all those ball-bearings can be hard to clean up!! (As a dog owner of over forty years' standing, I know from experience that 'little - and not so little - presents' can be left anywhere.)

Yes, Rich-  lots of treats & lots of walkies around conventions & shows, hopefully!

Tony:  I certainly won't be motorizing the ears or tail or any of that gubbins, but I may at some stage motorize his movement.
To start with I'll just get him on little wheels so I can drag him around, then I might motorize him at a later date if I get round to it.

I'll certainly have to house train him, those iron filings are a bugger to sweep up!


So... Guys....I'm on the scrounge again...

Could anyone kindly provide me with the measurements for the computer panel on his back?



I could eyeball it, but I'd rather go for accuracy, if possible.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Can't wait to find a big stone wall to pose him on, while I jog past in a leotard!   

So, what did I get up to today?

I noticed the original prop has a seam along to top of the head, face & nose, where they had added the plates, but not filled the gaps, so I added extra sheets of hardboard to the top of the head, the face & the top of the nose to replicate this. I'll use a craft knife to hollow the seam out & make it more prominent.
I used a cardboard tube to make the cover for his nose laser, then I added some screws.
I noticed people usually have their screws flush, but I wanted mine to be more obvious, so I left them sticking out.
Next I added a load of filler.
So I need to sand the head down next & he'll nearly be ready for his first coat of paint:







So then I started work on the computer panel that sits on his back:





Once this is dry I'll stick it on his back, then fill with filler, then will come the long job of sanding the main body, then that, too will be ready for some paint.

Super excited!!

Ah yes, the head seam. I remember it well. Oh how I deliberated over whether to include it or not. I chose not to, out of fear that I'd make a mess of it and ruin the whole thing - and that is something I've regretted ever since!

Looking fantastic, as ever. Your computer panel looks spot on, please just remember to include a button that dispenses biscuits!

I have been studying all the K-9 build diaries in preparation for my build & I read your one & thought your K-9 looks great, even without the head seam.  

,I'm the one eating all the biscuits! K-9's going to be on a strict diet!!

(Actually, I did like a nice Bonio when I was a little kid... I was always fighting our pet dogs for them!!)

So today I spent a lot of time sanding his head.

But, I got some other bits done too...

I fixed the control panel to his back...





Then, I was looking at my wife's contact lens fluid bottles...



I cut the tops of the lids off, drilled holes in the end & glued them to his head to make nice little holders for his ears...



Also, I found something in the street that would be quite nice for his "eye sucker".
No idea what it is. Part of a toy perhaps?
Anyway, I think it'll look quite good...







It has gaps in the sucker part. I can't decide whether to fill those gaps or not.
Filling the holes would make it more accurate, but I actually quite like the "gappy" look.
I think it looks quite funky & unique.
What do you guys think?

Anyway, lots more sanding tomorrow, before I start thinking about paint.
