All of the TV TARDISes (Hartnell's, and Smith's) are between 4.5 and 5 inches in diameter. A bit smaller than the 6-inch diameter of the ones on an actual Police Box (or one of the Peter Cushing Movie TARDIS props).

Hartnell's was 4.5 inches (and I wish I could remember where I read that). Smith's (now Capaldi's) is said to be about 4.5 inches (and has that ever been confirmed by an actual, nigh-on impossible to get "measurement" of the Smith box logo?). But even so, as the New Series TARDISes are so much bigger than the Hartnell (or, indeed, any of the Classic Series TARDISes) I like to stick with the 5-inch diameter because (IMHO) anything smaller on a larger TARDIS would look too small.

I was just watching Doctor Who Extra for the most recent episode, and at the end they had Ellis George doing a closing bit with the TARDIS set doors when I noticed that the St Johns badge hadn't been updated from the 7B to Series 8 one:



They might have just thought no one would notice, they possibly may have forgotten. I'm interested to hear others thoughts.

This was actually brought up in another thread (and I'll post a link to that if I can find it, which I can't right now because I'm looking for it - someone please help me out with this if you know where that discussion took place), but basically, everyone else had the same thoughts on it as you. The production crew probably felt that with the little screen time those doors actually get, and at the oblique angles people see the logo from, that no one would notice, especially since the 7b and 8 logos are so close in appearance. So, they decided to save some money and just leave the logo on those doors as is (even though the new logo is a sticker now, rather than having to be hand-painted on like the ones in the Smith era).

But they never figured on people like us, with keen eyes and a quick finger on that PAUSE button!

A little too much brute force applied, thanks to some action scene where everyone shoves the doors open as they rush into the TARDIS? Or, maybe, some rough handling by some props guys or stage hands?

It's definitely pushed beyond its "end stop". (I would put a solid bit of metal on that edge of the main door frame - just enough to stop this from happening, but yet still not be visible on screen. A small tab at the top and bottom corners should do, or maybe even in the middle, where one would expect to see the "latch" for the phone door; either way would work.)

I'm sorry to revive an old thread, but I've recently finished a model of the Earl's Court Box, and I designed a St John's Ambulance badge to go with it. I know Dino is our designer in respect to St John's Ambulance badges, but I thought it would be wrong not to share this.



What do you think?

There is something very Earl's Court-y about it.  When I saw it on the model I thought you'd really nailed it.  So then I popped over to look at photos of the actual box and was shocked to see it doesn't have one.  Yours just looks right for that box.

Well, it did have this badge, or something very close anyway. It went missing though.

Interesting. The seller claims it's from a first aid station from 1939. I didn't think it was specifically designed for the Earl's Court box, but it never crossed my mind to think that this concrete design/variation dated from WW2.
