I was able to order an aluminium sign. The now ubiquitous Sikaflex attached it to the door with ease.

I am fortune that the box's previous owner had upgraded the phone panel so it has the raised lettering as seen on the programme.

So that's the exterior done. Most of the interior has been sealed, though the doors, phone panel and sign boxes need a little work. Then I need to coat the inside, think about lighting, and possibly get a new backdrop made. But for today I'm delighted.

Looks lovely!

Have you had any comments from your neighbours yet?

I had to take mine down in the end due to neighbours complaining  :'(

Are you serious?!  Well, I suspect you are, but you know what I mean.

That's sad because I have to contend with my next door neighbor leaving at least one or two cars parked in the open yard (rather than the driveway) with their hoods (bonnets for the Brits here) propped open.  About the only element missing is the collection of cinder blocks upon which to elevate said vehicles, completing the stereotype of the American southern "redneck"

Sincerely,

Bill

That's terrible! What kind of soulless people are your neightbours?!

I've heard of people who had it in their driveway or in that little garden thing/courtyard/parking space in the front of their houses and they've had to take it down, but never when it is your back garden/yard and not fully visible from the street.

What did your neighbours have against your TARDIS?
Oh my giddy aunt!!

Thank you.

Fortunately the neighbours on either side are fans and find it cool.

So sorry you had to take yours down; that must have been devastating.

Multitasking! Monitors on board as I do some quick prep for painting the interior while the kids have an afternoon nap.

"All done with mirrors, I dare say," hypothesised the Brigadier the first time he entered the TARDIS. Indispensable technology for coating these blind spots.

Nearly finished the inside and will post a proper update soon. Had a couple of spare minutes this afternoon so thought I'd recreate my favourite title sequence... Should've worn my scarf!IMG_20200501_204544_595.jpg

My TARDIS came with some extras. There's the phone panel that I already mentioned. And at some point she was kitted out to resemble the Smith/Capaldi interior. The doors were painted white; the side walls were fitted with the entrance piping; there was the backdrop; the floor was grey; and there was a cupboard with phone; the lamp worked and the signs were lit (of which more soon). It must have been swell. Sadly, the piping was damaged and removed before I claimed her. In its absence I found my preference was to have a uniform colour throughout the interior.

I did consider white, as the doors were light and airy. And it would have been in keeping with most of the photos of real boxes I've seen (and a fair number of the builds on TB). But I've always been intrigued by how the classic series depicted the TARDIS entrance; by the occasional shadowy glimpse of the interior; and have spend hours or even years of my life wondering just what it would be like to step through the doors into the darkness and finding the big double doors. So I decided I wanted something a little darker, gloomier and mysterious. And as the Superdec is a little pricey, it was also prudent to use the same colour as the exterior. Again, everything got three coats; it's shiny and intense and I love it.

As for the phone and the cupboard... For the moment I've decided not to include them. I have a three year old girl and a two year old boy who love the TARDIS. Should they accidently lock themselves in, we can quickly reach in through the phone panel and unlock the door (and see and reassure them). Plus, without the cupboard the panel lights up nicely. But not including them hurts...

As I mentioned previously, my box came with lighting installed: an LED bulb in the lamp and ribbons of LED lights in the sign boxes. But there were two slight drawbacks. Firstly, they were powered by a car battery; and secondly, I blew them all up.

(Two soldered ends of wire got nudged together while I was poking around.)

The bulbs could've been replaced, but the car battery bothered me a little. It sat on the floor and I was worried about my wee kids poking around or stumbling into it. And it wasn't the most convenient thing to shift whenever they were about, or to recharge out their way. It was an effective set up, just not ideal for my present circumstances.

Maybe at some point I'll connect to the mains, but for the time being I've followed Russell and Volpone's advice and installed a camping lamp.

I chose this model because its brightness is 1000 lumens and it's rechargeable via USB. It runs for 8 hours on maximum brightness and has a charging time of about 6 hours (slightly better than the car battery). I hung it from a chain from the roof so that I easily reach to turn on or off, and easily lift down for recharging. So a far simpler, safer and much more convenient system than before... though not as effective. Due to the internal frame, the "public call" tends to be in shadow, and I can't currently light the top lamp. But for £20 I'm very pleased.

The rubbery surface of the lamp reminded me of the Superdec finish and I was inspired to paint it to match the TARDIS.
