Thanks all. Nice to get encouragement on something that is seen as the garden hog!

Current to do list is:

* Texture roof and repaint
* Build pull door
* Texture and repaint other wall sides
* Build last sign box
* Finish building base
* Fashion arrangement for fresnel lens
* Weep about being stuck at home
* Dust cobwebs from wallet
* Wonder if I'll ever clear the shed of projects (including two other console builds, k9 and various other props this forum will appreciate..)

Good weather calls for some TARDIS building! So here's the second sign box almost finished.. within about half hour. Funny how a change of plan moves for a more reliable and quicker approach to building a box! Oh and some prework you did about 2 years ago too.

And the other three waiting for signs, texturing and painting:

Looking GREAT David! very interesting sign boxes! are they heavy? :D
living, learning, loving, refurbing, & preserving!

davidnagel

Thanks Mark!

They aren't that heavy actually.

The top and bottoms are made from 8?mm redwood, the fronts 5mm plywood and the inner supports are 12mm timber. Doesnt amount to a great deal but I am only moving them from place to place once in awhile. Maybe after I setup and strike down the box a few times I'll begin to realise how heavy all the components are.

If you want heavy, pop over and lift up my posts (giggidy) they are entirely MDF............ because I'm a fool.

The POLICE BOX signs have me excited.  I didn't want to say anything, but in the other photos, your top signs seemed kind of, shall we say...puny for the Hudolin prop. Those look like they'll fit the bill very well.  Those are the 2 things one expects of the Hudolin:  subtlely square panels, big top signs, and window panes that are randomly placed.  THREE.  Three things one expects.  Right, I'll come in again.
"My dear Litefoot, I've got a lantern and a pair of waders, and possibly the most fearsome piece of hand artillery in all England. What could possibly go wrong?"

For the sign boxes I've gone off expected measurements in hopes they'll look more in line with the film prop. But we'll see...

Hi all,

Well, the beauty of having your own box is that you can footle about with it however you like.
I fiddled with a few things on my Hudolin build, "correcting" bits I personally didn't like.
First thing I did was make the top signs smaller, as I thought they were oversized on the original prop.
Secondly I made the window pane arrangement regular, like the Newberry, as that's how I always remembered it.

(Other bits, like the corner posts I changed from the plans out of necessity, depending on available materials, tools & skill levels.)

Of course, eventually I went completely "off-piste" & painted the whole thing MetBox colours!

Looking forward to what you are going to be doing with yours! :)

Your continued support is appreciated mate. Your build has inspired me to persevere with mine and your build thread helps me along the way too, as I drop in now and again to troubleshoot any issues I face. thank you thank you!

No probs!

It pleases me to think that my humble build can be of help & an inspiration to others.

Keep up the good work, buddy!

Since I'm waiting the opportunity to buy more wood for the base...

Here's a mockup of the pull to open sign.

And speaking of opening doors, some thoughts about handles...

Handles.JPG

using BigPrint and a dimension from the door, not the most accurate way of doing this but I think it is works... 6" handle.

As for the pull to open handle:

handles_2.JPG

Not really anything there for that handle! I might take some liberties on the size of this one. Given the fact the style doesn't match the main door handle, am tempted to either makeshift (maybe they did here?) or follow suit and it not match the main one.

Life Pro Tip when having a cutting list..

If your wood has a label, take it off and stick it on your cutting list. Ya know, in case you need to buy more.

Don't envy you there...

Making window frames is soooo repetitive...

davidnagel

It is. But 3 down. 6 to go
