Yup.. looks like your weatherproofing will be a success!

To seal the box I decided to use Sikaflex marine sealant; it's strong, durable and can be painted over... or so I've read. I'm quite a creative person, but this project is way outside my experience and comfort zone. After we committed to buying this TARDIS I began to panic at the enormity of what I was taking on. Fortunately TARDIS Builders is here and  I'm indebted to everyone who's ever contributed.

Logic would suggest I start sealing on the outside. But sealant and I don't have the best history; just ask the ugly mess around the bath in my old flat. So I decided to start on the inside where it would be less noticeable and to give the sealant and I a chance to bond. And so far I'm pleasantly surprised by the finish. It's not to the standard of the geniuses and craftspeople on TB, but I'm growing in confidence that I'll be able to pull it off. And I have K9 to help me out.

I spend a pretty significant portion of any given day thinking "I hope I know what I'm doing."  Which reminds me of the Mario Andretti quote they stuck on our graduation CD of files from USMC comm school:  "If you're totally in control, you're going too slow." 

Just had the pleasure of catching up on this. Looking absolutely fabulous, and can't wait to see it all lit up! I'm very excited to have one of the new-style TPEs on the forum, definitely learned a bit about their construction looking at some of your pictures. Again, I'm taken by how bloody good they are, and I'm sure it will give you years of happiness... provided we get this weatherproofing correct!

Looks like you're off to a fine start and are certainly on the right lines. Can I ask if you have anything special planned for the roof? Other outdoor builders will surely agree that this tends to be the problem area, getting it right first time will save you a ton of money down the line because you'll have to put less money in the swear jar every time you come to touch it up! (Says me, the guy who ended up completely replacing his roof after three years...)

I know that's a problem area and looked into fibreglass coating it. I feel that's beyond me at the moment. I did ask a few local firms for a quote, but none replied... Perhaps they thought I was having a laugh. With the UK in lockdown just now, I'm having to get on with it. The TARDIS was scattered, Frontios style, around the house. The walls and base were taking up a huge space in the kitchen, the corner posts were in the loft, the roof was on my side of the bed. My wife hss been very patient, but it was time to get on with it!

This summer my roof finally and irrevocably failed.  And having worked with fiberglass on my A-Team van, I decided to do a fiberglass roof on my TARDIS.  The problem is (for you) the Matt Smith TARDIS has such clean crisp lines and sharp corners.  Granted, a more skillful 'glassworker with more time could certainly do better work, but my roof is very...shall we say, "organic."  At this point it looks like it was made of frosting.  That almost kind of works with an original series TARDIS, but it would ruin the clean lines of the Matt Smith box. 

Still, I'd say it isn't rocket science.  With patience, diligence, lots of YouTube videos, a little luck, and a lot of sanding, you could probably do a pretty good roof yourself.

It hurts me to say this, but yesterday I started sealing the outside of the box rather than finish the inside. Feeling more confident now working with the Sikaflex, I felt that the outside was the priority.

With a very active two year old boy and three year old girl, I only managed to complete one side. I sealed where the wall panel meets the roof, corner posts and the base; also some iffy spots on the roof and the sign boxes.

The sealant is smooth and even and tapers off nicely. I didn't worry too much about straight edges as it will soon be painted over.

This TARDIS came with a very nice backdrop. The lighting is possibly a little too stark and the eye line a little too low to be convincing. So maybe I'll find a way of making a new one somewhere down the line.

I keep thinking that, ideally it should be a curved backdrop to induce more perspective.

Or with the old school types, U shaped, and include the interior doors on the straight edges.

No idea how to work that out for printing on a flat though....

Perhaps several images composited or a rotating panorama like you get on phone cameras.

The Character Options new series models had wrap around backdrops and were very effective. I printed my own for my McCoy box.

That last picture reminds me of another of my wife's presents. One Christmas we took the long drive from Glasgow to Cardiff  to have a quick tour round the TARDIS set. Walking through the police box doors into the console room was a lifelong dream come true. And the fact thar it was an enclosed set made it feel all the more real. Then we had lunch in Clara's burger joint TARDIS.

It always adds a little 'something' to see a Tardis with a backdrop for the interior! Of course, comparing it to you standing in the set doors (you lucky sod person ) I can see what you mean about the lighting - I think the only time I've seen the 2013 console room that brightly lit is in the images that were used for google street view!
I've said it elsewhere, but this is another thread with people posting 'Tardis interior backdrops to give the bigger-on-the-inside illusion' that makes me surprised there isn't already a thread specifically for them.
